Sonia Sulaiman | Patreon creating stories inspired by Palestinian folklore

The other day, someone asked how to support me.

I’m currently working on writing and illustrating a picture book retelling of one of my favourite Palestinian folktales, and a novella drawing on Palestinian folk magic.

Interested? Consider joining my Patreon: www.patreon.com/cw/soniasula...

For a hot second I thought this meant we were getting MORE Mrs. Davis and my heart was crushed to find out that was not the Round 2 in question

okay this prompt might start a fight but:

what is THEE sci-fi/fantasy/horror/romantasy book from the past year or two that makes you feel like, "oh my GOD you haven't read this yet?? you absolutely must read this immediately"?? like what's your pick for essential contemporary sffh reading

Remember that when AI stole your shit, Big Publishing did not fight for your copyright.

This should cause an immense shift in author/publisher dynamics because it's huge.

And yet...

tonight! (alongside every other queer reading alas, but maybe also you could dip into several & fill out your queer reading bingo card??)

Curious? And it has swords, mentions of food, a lot of warmth and - of course - bigger themes like war.

Being in conversation with @rebeccaroanhorse.bsky.social felt like a gift for me as a writer and reader in this moment of rumours of war and unceasing terrible political news.
There may be some words in this conversation that offer your heart & imagination something more to hold onto too.

The chapbook for Seven Dreams, and the Russian anthology in which it was collected

The chapbook for Seven Dreams, and the Russian anthology in which it was collected

Seven Dreams - long out of print, impossibly rare; five of the seven pieces in it were published in Andrei Codrescu’s Exquisite Corpse; all seven were bravely translated and published in a Russian anthology that probably got somebody killed

Likewise, my grandfather who escaped death at the hands of the Japanese occupiers was my dad's father. My ah gong was a hardworking lorry driver who ferried goods back and forth.

My other grandfather (mum's dad) was a Shanghainese tailor.

A thing that sounds fake but is 100% true?

My grandfather was caught by the Japanese during the Japanese Occupation of Singapore (Sook Ching). He pretended to be dumb, frustrated the interrogators and was let go with a big brand on his back.

(Sook Ching Massacre is still a scar in our history)

Samuel Delany dedicated his monumental novel The Mad Man to me without ever having met me (and in fact only because of his reaction to a chapbook of mine that I thought had gotten lost in the mail)

* when I found out, I was at work at my desk and I fainted right to the floor

Good news: my dragon is now on Netgalley!

It’s a different sort of dragon rider novel: one from the dragon’s POV. He’s just here for the free food, he swears.

If you are an ARC-ish sort, there is a Read Now window open through Friday.

AH REVIEWS ARE IN AND THEY'RE POSITIVE

sooo excited to move forward with this book that's a hybrid of academic analysis, lyric memoir, speculative fiction, and space for decolonial dreaming -- and soooo grateful to the generous, attentive, and thorough reviews that are pushing it to better <3

This interview is one of my most honest and upfront. I also wax poetic a few times bc I’m old. Anyway, thank you Shingai Njeri Kagunda. Great questions!
