Every stage of this process - his arrest, spending a year in jail, being dumped on the streets to die - would be deeply shameful in a society that actually valued human life.

The real story is that foreign govts try to "interfere" all the time. In 2020 and 2024 we had mechanisms to catch them, call them out, & mitigate damage. Now, those mechanims are gone & the Trump admin would prefer to exploit "foreign interference" to justify a federal take-over of elections.

OFFS. When Iran tried to interefere in 2020, researchers caught them and called them out. Then the Benz-Weiss-Taibbi-Musk-Jordan-Trump axis labeled those researchers "censors" ... and set about defunding them and dismantling their organizations.

the "WNBA doesn't make a profit" crowd is going to move the goalposts pretty fast here, mostly because their investment isn't in the facts as much as it is in making women feel small

I have noticed that when it comes to anti-Black racism, the ask is usually "let's minimize the impact because of the intent."

In too many instances, Black pain, embarrassment, and dehumanization come at the expense of absolving white guilt.

see that's that bullshit

You read that right. Sociology students at Florida colleges cannot be taught that institutions intentionally discriminate OR that there is systemic or structural discrimination + bias. Evidence, research, education be damned.

The party of freedom, folks. πŸ₯΄

Always has been about racism.

1. The UT system is actively harming its students and the value of their degrees.
2. These are the same people who complained about β€œwoke libs” needing β€œsafe spaces” right?

It was always prejudice. It’s pretty much always prejudice (usually rooted in racism specifically).

Conservatives spent years complaining about ”safe-spaces” and β€œliberal snowflakes” only to turn around and show they are absolutely terrified of ideas they don’t like (β€œracism is bad” β€œgender is fluid”) and willing to use state power to avoid the slightest discomfort.

The snowiest of flakes.

We are (and have been) watching the destruction not only of a historic and iconic newspaper, but also of a local news source for DMV residents. All for fascism. Cancel your WaPo subscription and support @citycastdc.bsky.social is the moral of this depressing story

Even when they show signs of weakness or forced regret, we must not give an inch. Authoritarian governments still respond to public opinion, which is why sustained pressure matters. We have to keep making clear that these thuggish actions are unconscionable and will not be tolerated. Don’t let up.

To be fair, Strong is the only non-guard on this list and her shot profile is pretty different from the others’…but also if you aren’t watching Sarah Strong you absolutely should be. Total bucket, electric, excellent footwork, etc., etc. Excited to follow her for many years to come!

What Policymakers Should Know about Institutional Investors’ Role in the Housing Market Who are institutional investors, and what is their impact on housing affordability?

This piece I wrote back in 2023 feels relevant again. It’s also a good reminder that without good data (which is a public policy issue, especially these days) we lack the information needed to effectively guide public action: housingmatters.urban.org/articles/wha...

Reason #1000000 that anyone who crafts any type of public policy - but certainly economic policy - should be required to take basic coursework in economics.

"Even after accounting for the upfront costs and delayed benefits, enrolling marginal applicants to public universities generates substantial net returns for society, the marginal students themselves, and the government budget."

What we study is often shaped by who we are. But economists, who shape public policy, aren’t representative of the people their work affects. The @sadiecollective.bsky.social helps bring more voices to the economic table so that we study the issues that matter and find solutions that really work.
