There was a meme going around about how a huge amount of society is propped up by a thin post of “well surely no one would ever-“ and the thing is we kind of have to have that assumption somewhere. Yet for some reason have elected the people that in fact would ever and we will suffer for it.

For some reason people imagine the Democrats are the same as the UK Labour, who *have* thrown trans people under the bus, embraced shitty racism in a rush to the right, and -- crucially -- are actually the party in power, instead of a relatively powerless opposition.

One of the most pernicious ideas that have come out from the US over the past decades is the idea that civic duty is a performative sham at best and a detriment at worst; it's led to the moneyed classes abandoning even a pretense of it and the rest to have no stake in the country.

also in a country founded on a mantra of “no taxation without representation” I am concerned that we have abridged it to simply no taxation, and also not loving the idea of how easy it is to say no representation without taxation.

I want representation in Congress and a government that does good things, and you expect me to be a freeloader instead?
