People commend things for “taking a big swing” but. Maybe they should take a regular sized, or even small, swing that’s also good, instead.
Text from Ursula K. Le Guin’s novel The Lathe of Heaven: It's not that he's evil. He's right, one ought to try to help other people. But that analogy with snakebite serum was false. He was talking about one person meeting another person in pain. That's different. Perhaps what I did, what I did in April four years ago... was justified.... (But his thoughts shied away, as always, from the burned place.) You have to help another person. But it's not right to play God with masses of people. To be God you have to know what you're doing. And to do any good at all, just believing you're right and your motives are good isn't enough. You have to... be in touch. He isn't in touch. No one else, no thing even, has an existence of its own for him; he sees the world only as a means to his end. It doesn't make any difference if his end is good; means are all we've got.... He can't accept, he can't let be, he can't let go. He is insane.... He could take us all with him, out of touch, if he did manage to dream as I do. What am I to do?
I’m reading the Lathe of Heaven and while obviously there are a lot of differences, Pluribus is lowkey copying off of Dr. Haber’s homework for the ethical dilemma the Hive presents
Aliens, of course, are real but I don’t have to worry about them because I know they’re nice. They would be my friends if they knew me.
I’m glad that I’m not superstitious. I have enough problems without having to worry about made up shit like ghosts or whether or not the stars are mad at me, too
I would have been very kind to and taken better care of Gregor Samsa than his awful family
i don't watch Industry, but from the outside looking in it was interesting to see people point out that a character lined up with a Public Figure oddly specifically, get dismissed as reading too much into it or too literally, and then seemingly be very painfully vindicated in said direct comparison
Regular Amount of Years Later: The Normal Temple

Me and the lads are getting together to write triolets later. Yeah, they’re poems eight lines in length with a ABAAABAB rhyming structure. Come on by if you feel up to using structural limitations to spur artistic creativity
Cruel to me specifically for there to be a new film of Camus’s L’Étranger shot in black and white and featuring Denis Lavant and Swann Arlaud, but the director is someone I’ve given several chances to and never particularly liked
Remember! ☝️You can change the radiant child in you to a reflection of the shit you were meant to serve!
the scene where he goes into the room when he hears her crying but still can't talk about anything except butler stuff... dear god
Highly recommend The Remains of the Day if you want to watch a great movie and also be profoundly upset by the emotional decisions of a butler
oh neat i didn't know you could do this with storygraph. here's January
Not that you give a fuck but here He Is
Also I need a third 1970s sci fi novel with thematic references to Chinese philosophy for nonbinary offspring
I haven’t read MithHC for years and have only just started LoH so unfortunately I can’t really answer my own question.
Man in the High Castle son or Lathe of Heaven daughter?
When people talk about the problem of cellphones in movies they often point to Park Chan-wook as someone who’s figured it out, but imo his approach fits the tonal mix of serious-funny that’s specific to his work very well but wouldn’t suit most other films
We put this little cave out when it was especially cold a few weeks ago and I now don’t have the heart to take it back inside

it is pretty crazy that the niche of "ereader that just fits in your pocket" has gone unfilled this long though. It Follows had the shell in 2014 and had people saying "wow that's exactly what I want to have in my pocket/bag all the time"
