The Massachusetts Department of Correction has been fighting me for months, trying to withhold data about its collaboration with ICE.
Yesterday, I won that fight, and obtained records showing that the state has transferred more than 2,000 people into ICE custody since 2009.

The political reality is that he cannot win, that his government is a Frankenstein of leftists and nationalists that realized that it would be a lot worse with the extreme right in power. I’m not sure he will be able to repeat it in the next elections.
It is one of the few center left governments left in Europe, so in that sense, he is all we have left with a semblance of progressivism

I have been teaching a course in Caribbean pirates and representations of piracy in popular cultures for years. This presentation was born out of this class.

My hope is to entertain an audience while letting them understand how to stereotypes of "pirates"as we see them represented in popular culture came to be.
I have developed a presentation titled "The Real Pirates of the Caribbean, and Why We Think We Love Them." I do a very quick pass to the history of Caribbean piracy, and then I jumped on to talk about representations of pirates in British literature and Hollywood films.
Do you like Caribbean pirates? Everyone does (myself included), but most people don't really know why. Why have we come to love characterizations of individuals who were so violent and brutal?
