Hummingbird Pie
We here at The Pie Fairy specialize in what we call "pieification"-- the creation of pie inspired by not-pie. To celebrate March, the most sacred month of Pi(e), I set my sights on the delicious Jamaican recipe of Hummingbird Cake. Hummingbird Cake, often believed to be from the American South, actually stems from a Jamaican tourism push in 1968. Then known as "Doctor Bird Cake", it was named after an indigenous hummingbird variety in Jamaica that apparently opted for medical school over The Arts. 🙃

The recipe for Doctor Bird Cake resonated with bakers in the South, often popping up at state and county fairs. Today, it still features many signature flavors and ingredients of Jamaica, and serves as yet another testament to our country's "melting pot" strength. Our Hummingbird Pie features a spiced banana-pecan frangipane filling, a vanilla sable short crust, and dots of pineapple and whipped cream. We hope this pie brings you a taste of a tropical spring.
