Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.
The final panel from a 1985 Peanuts comic strip. Marcie says to Peppermint Patty, “We could go into the book store.” Patty replies, “Are you out of your mind?!”
This panel from 1985 never gets old.
A lot of people were out in Greenfield last night. Fun night.
Happy Halloween! For today, we will be matching sales up to $250 with a donation to the Center for Self-Reliance Food Pantry.
Covered a 4-hour shift at @federalstbooks.bsky.social today. In my modestly sized town, we sold out of the Constitution, sold 2 copies of Common Sense, and I lent some packing tape to a guy who needed to repair his inflatable dinosaur.
I think what disappoints me about Banned Books Week is that it's a campaign of bottled awareness that disappears the other 51 weeks of the year. We are supposed to react with shock and dismay when we learn books are banned. What we need are anger and refusal.

Fellow authors, I love you, and I know it feels like we don’t have a choice, but B&N and Am*zon both scheduled sales this week to preempt Independent Bookstore Day, a hugely vital source of income for indie bookstores. Please don’t promote their sales; please promote your local indie this week.

A small plastic skeleton sitting on a black bookcase wearing a Santa Claus hat. It has a sign reading THE HORROR! displayed on its lap and there is a label reading HORROR on the face of the shelf below its legs.
