just my two cents on these scenes from this decades old show lol
All things considered, if these moments are just games, you kind of rob this character of his humanity, you rob him of his depth, you take away the moments that underpin his heart and emotion, and he is more emotive than people give credit for
i also think him calling misa his second friend confirms this, and him almost falling for her is fun too. hes a tragic and pretty sad character when you really think about it, and these moments pin that to me
He meets the first person who can ever fully understand him, match him, who he can fight with or do sports and feel challenged. i think there is real sadness to the idea that this one person could be his enemy
to me there is no way this isnt a sincere scene. its the only scene his eyes narrow up until this point.
same with his friend comment, his cadence is different. L spends his whole life alone with no one who understands him. meeting someone close to his IQ changes this
So when he hears shinigami on the tape, two different people, he cant just say its games anymore. the existance of supernatural and other worldly beings shatters his whole sense of reality, how he has approached his whole life
L's whole worldview is logic, cases have solutions, mysteries have answers, everything is explainable. in the scene before misas tape mentions shinigami he says that no one would believe his theory alone, but if light suggests it, they can look into it
I watch a lot of reactions (guilty pleasure) its interesting how many people assume L lies or is playing games when he freaks out about shinigami or declares Light as his first friend. i think this are his most honest moment

and just to circle back to the first thing i said, i think you have to like the tomie character, but the first tomie film to me, is perfect encapsulation of what i like in how j horror usually presents stories, its not scary and its pretty slow, but worth a try
Ive had 0 luck with Nakata so far lol as far as j horror goes ive mostly been getting into tomie. i know koji shiriashi has a series of found footage films you can see on yt
Id also recommend tsukamoto just for insnaity, and in case you havent seen it, videodrome its a very abstract horror gem
