I have been thinking about "friction" as in ease of use on a turn the thing on until actually playing timeframe. Enthusiasts can get past the friction but casual players find it exhausting. The things for kids are simplistic and have little friction to start hence their stickiness.

I play tested my game at PAX Unplugged in the Unpub room. I got really good feedback and I'm really close to locking in the final text. Check out Alien Entities! You play as a group of scientists and one player is a secret alien trying to mutate the crew.
At least we get two years to talk about boardgames.
