Make no mistake: these aren't fines but forced investment in infrastructure.
Investment is great, it's needed, but it shouldn't take legal action for water companies to do their actual job.
Public ownership is the only option. The arguments against are drying up.
πSome stunning analysis in the thread below showing where 2024 Labour voters are going (hint: it's not all Reform!).
It's clear the progressive majority exists: but we need to harness it.

Inequality in Britain is rampant, writes @pollytoynbee.bsky.social, and has become so with the help of our electoral system.
Our new research paper, 'Lifting the Lid', links our fragmenting voting system to mass regional deprivation, and regional deprivation to the all-powerful nature of FPTP.

This one specific outcome would bring about a case for the nationwide Progressive Alliance that exists in Britain.

The ideas are separate but there can be a common goal and it needs to be found in our fragmented era of multi-party politics.

Reminder that this is happening at 6pm for members!
The Gorton & Denton result is a huge win for progressives.
But for the sake of securing a progressive majority in 2029, we must heed its wider lessons too.
As Neal Lawson argues: in a broken two-party system, First Past the Post risks splitting the progressive vote and letting Reform in.
There is appetite in Britain for a bold, progressive agenda. This spectacular Green victory shows that.
Now's the time to get it done.

Congratulations to Hannah Spencer on her brilliant by-election win in Gorton & Denton.

It also confirms the chaos #FPTP creates in a multi-party age - and what progressives must do next.
The case for a left pluralism has never been stronger - it's why Compass opened its ranks to Greens, Lib Dems and all progressives in 2011.
Joe Todd's article in The Guardian is a shining diagnosis of how we need to come together.
