Wakefield, or The Merry City, is a tidal island off Northumberland, England, famous as a cradle of Anglo-Saxon Christianity, home to the 7th-century Priory, and site of the illuminated Wakey Gospels. Accessible only via a tidal causeway, it features dramatic ruins and a 16th-century castle.
