If it is sunny and above 65 F, we should see them and much more! Bring a lunch and sturdy shoes - waders are not needed. We should be finished by 2 PM. There is no fee. If you plan to join us, please send an email to registration@widragonflysociety.org and mention Sandhill.
Dan Jackson will give a presentation on dragonflies in the headquarters building and then we will drive the gravel loop around the wetlands and woods, stopping at several spots to look for early-season dragonflies and damselflies. Two species of boghaunters will be our primary targets.
The Friends of Sandhill invited WDS to create a dragonfly event on May 23, 2026, at the Sandhill State Wildlife Area, which is near Babcock in Wood County. The address of the headquarters is 1715 County Hwy X. At 9:30 AM on May 23,

You're most welcome. I can't identify species here, but definitely damselfly, not dragonfly. Damselflies usually hold their wings folded together (but not all) and are more delicate than dragonflies.
This is a damselfly

I spent last week on the beach in southern CA. This week I'm back in the very frigid Upper Midwest. We sure appreciate our spring here, when it finally arrives!
Took the photo of this slightly spent Fortnite Lily in Laguna Beach.
Side of a bright blue building with one white window covered from inside with a wooden board also painted white. Snow on the ground and a reddish-brown simple vertically slatted fence running in front of the building.
I'm late, but here.

Thanks for all your comments. I cried just reading this one as I think of my dad and brother, lost 11 months apart.
I like that idea of "practice". It's not "one and done"
Thank you!
I grew up wandering around that parkway!
Thank you!
Fall forest scene with mostly bare trees but some golden and green leaves still hanging onto a foreground branch over a river reflecting more trees and bright blue sky.
