Instead of reading the news, I have made blueberry muffins [1], tidied out the closet a bit, and went through all of the mail that had somehow built up last week.

The Fillmore in San Francisco is almost completely empty. The chandeliers are lit in blues and purples, and you can see them reflected on the shiny floor. The stage is set for Margo Price. A few people are standing right up against the stage.

Sometimes I want to go to a conference because I care deeply about the topic or the audience for that topic. I want to go to this conference to see what kind of people go to it and what they tell each other when they’re talking to themselves.

At Sur La Table, the clearance rack features misbegotten holiday ornaments. Top row are drinks: a red cocktail with cherries, a bottle of bourbon, a bottle of beer, a tropical cocktail, and a bottle of champagne. Second row are pastries and sweets: an iced bun, a fancy bread, a blueberry (?) muffin, a piece of carrot cake, and a red-and-white striped Starbucks-esque coffee cup. Third row is weird: a raw steak, a charcuterie board, a rack of ribs, a tin of caviar, a round peppermint candy, a slice of pepperoni pizza, a whole tomato, and a whole Brie round. Fourth row is hors d’oeuvres: a crudités platter, a cup of instant ramen, a platter of deviled eggs, a pig in a blanket, and a popcorn machine.

Hmm, I just realized that I might not have phrased this well. I’m not the one adopting. I’m just one of the supportive family here to cheer on the proceedings.

Counsel asked the parents whether they had the support of their friends and family. The entire courtroom erupted in laughter.
We just finished the legal adoption for my friends’ teenage kid. We had so many people in the courtroom that there weren't enough seats, plus another 25 folks on Zoom. The judge cried when verbalizing the decree. She said she was so happy to see an adoption with so many family there to support.
