A6: Perhaps, a 'Victorious Future' is one wherein we, as individuals & collectives, remain committed to asking "Whose future? Who is benefitting? Who isn't? What needs to change to remedy this?" and continually refine the structures, systems, and practices that move society forward #literacies
Q6: I see a vision in which our research enables all kids to get to experience victories/"win" as they practice #literacies, and a vision where we can see more clearly what victory looks like from their perspectives.
A6 1/2: I think of Toni Morrisonβs quote that the purpose of racism is distraction. I think βVictorious Futuresβ in this sociopolitical context means not merely reacting but continuing long-term proactive building of power and resources for the flourishing of minoritized communities. #literacies
A6 2/2: Research can help bring resources and attention/solidarity to these efforts.

A6: Thinking back to our opening question, I think a "Victorious Future" must necessarily be a co-constructed one, a future that, much like the good ole Fortnite gaming lobby, is made by a multitudinous mix of folks, all doing our own dances yet working toward the same #victory. #literacies
I'm curious about how transnational gaming not only creates translingual spaces but also spacing to develop sociocultural competency through dialogue. #literacies
A5: My biggest suggestion? Look where the youth are gaming and follow them there! Almost a decade ago, I was teasing my high school students for their fascination with a new game called "Fortnite." Now, I play all the time. #literacies
Q4: Working with @amystorn.bsky.social and Kathy Walsh to design the "Open World Writing" framework has shaped how I approach writing in all aspects of my life, not just academic writing. Heuristics/thinking tools matter. www.openworldwriting.com #literacies.
Oh, I love that it changed you! My students introduced me to K-dramas. #literacies I love hearing from youth what they are doing and thinking about cause it helps me understand their experiences.
Ohhh! This is a great point. How might this look like? I had never considered how AI might be influencing youth's gaming #literacies.
Thanks for being here! Hope to see you at AERA. π€©
A4 2/2: For me this has manifested in my life through looking for more community-based approaches to language learning in or emphasizing in religious spaces the need to attend not only to individual concerns but see how those concerns and struggles are rooted in structures of injustice. #Literacies
A4 1/2: I come from a hyper-individualistic culture, but working with my advisor Dr. Jerome Morris with his Communally Bonded Theory of education plus reading about multilingualism as ecological has influenced the way I think about creating healthy relationships and systems. #literacies
(2/2) If we want to foster educational spaces supporting authentic #literacies and linguistic engagements, ignoring the applications/spaces/communities that connect most to (and autonomously engage with) is just such a waste! It can reinforce notions of showing up to school as a separate other
(1/2) I can certainly try! For students that engage in gaming, especially in layered, online gaming spaces, many #literacies & linguistic elements are at play. Oftentimes, students attachments to/in these spaces create far more authentic, embodied engagements of themselves as literate individuals.
Sharing this article by @ujuanya.bsky.social and Esther Airemionkhale (tinyurl.com/AnyaAiremion...), which I know addresses multilingual education across Brazilian, Canadian, Colombian and US contexts through VR. #literacies
I assume this is tied to larger systems of global economies and post-colonial statuses for languages... I have known emergent bilingual students learning English to play online, which could be a good place for practicing their English.
Lexi, I love your emphasis on students' agency and self-naming of their goals and ideas of victory. #literacies
A3: I wasn't able to engage in live, online game much during my youth (slow internet in rural KY woes). As I've grown a bit more familiar, I see so much #literacies work happening in these spaces. Each gaming lobby is a confluence of languages, all united in the #literacies of the game. So awesome!
Oooh! I love this. I wonder what this type of experience helps people learn about themselves and their strengths in working in community? #literacies
Lexi, can you say more about this? What might this look like? I would love to hear your perspective on this. #literacies
**LSLP, sorry!
Ohh, I love that. I interpret "staying engaged over time" as deeply connected to my own understanding of cultivating relationality through small acts of faithfulness. In a game setting, staying engaged means being relational and playing your part with others, yes? #literacies
A2: I see so many #literacies opportunities to consider gaming team strategies and languages! Lately, I have been thinking about the ways in which such structures and language open a new level of relationality, especially in considering elevating students' contributions and voices in #literacies
A3 3/3: The entire series critiques whose names and languages get perceived as normative and requires background knowledge in both so-called English naming traditions and knowledge of South Asian naming traditions and basic Hindi vocabulary.
