An alternative paper, with a ‘narrower’ remit (and a more credible set of data points that actually support the conclusions) would be the more recent: www.nature.com/articles/s44...

And all of this misses the even broader coverage challenges of accounting for broadcast mentions (really difficult since these are from transcripts) and new media mentions (increasingly the major source of public exposure to news.
My other big concern with the 2018 study in particular was it only drew on 12 newspapers - all of them only in English - all only from Canada, US and UK. To generalise from this incredibly limited sample is really problematic - even if the conclusions echo the reality of the disparity in coverage.
Indeed, which is slightly better than only one phrase BUT is still massively incomplete. By way of baselines - our IPBES monitoring uses more than 250 different adjacent keywords/phrases, across more than 12 major languages - and we know we still miss many instances.
The disparity in coverage is an absolute reality but we also need to be careful about indicative evidence based primarily on keyword monitoring. Biodiversity (& to a lesser degree climate change) is often 'masked' by adjacent terminology like 'extinction'; 'nature loss' etc. in media reports

*This* is leadership. And @davidobura.bsky.social is so obviously right: turning your back on facts doesn't make them go away
"While it is clearly the prerogative of Governments to withdraw from global processes, like those of @ipbes.net, it is important to remember that this does not change the science or the relevance of that science to the lives and livelihoods of people in every community, in every part of the world. 🧪
