Day 8 #SciArtSeptember prompt niche. 🧪🐡 Can we talk about the cutest nesting strategy going? The Eastern Snail Shell Mason Bee (Osmia conjuncta) is a small N American blue bee which makes nests in suitable empty snail shells! In my linocut I show this adorable little pollinator with a Cepaea shell.🧵

My linocut print metallic blue-green insect with black wings known as ebony jewelwing (Calopteryx maculata) or black-winged damselflies. The males, like the one in my hand-carved and hand-printed linocut are turquoise with elegant black wings. The print is 8” x 10” on khaki green handmade paper with a deckle edge.

This is a Tulip-Tree Silkmoth (Callosamia anguilifera), it has dark brown caps on the top of the wing that change into lighter browns, oranges, and creams with white and black eyespots on the forewing and wing tips.

A yellow moth perched on my finger. This is a Honey Locust Moth (Syssphinx bicolor). The forewings are yellow with tiny gray dots and spots. The hindwings fade from a dark, coral orange to yellow.

A small, fuzzy moth perched on a white sheet in front of an LED light. This is a Pink Striped Oakworm moth (Anisota virginiensis). It has a fuzzy orange head with smooth wings that fade from burnt orange to a mauve-purple. It has two white dots near the top of the forewing.

A small, very fluffy white moth perched on a white sheet in front of a mercury vapor bulb. This is a Dot-Lined White moth. It's head and abdomen are fuzzy and remind me of faux fur fabric. The wings are white with brighter white, reflective veins and black dots throughout.

A Virginia Creeper Sphinx moth (Darapsa myron) hanging from an oak leaf. It has differing shades of olive green along its wings and abdomen.

A huge (five and a half inches long) Hickory Horned Devil caterpillar (Citherona regalis) hanging from a branch. It has large, orange horn shaped protrusions on its head and a bright green body with a yellow stripe along the side. This caterpillar turns into the Regal Moth.

A large Imperial Moth (Eacles imperialis) on the side of a tree. It has huge yellow wings that fade into a burnt orange color at the tips.

A Spanish Moth (Xanthopastis regnatrix) crawling along the forest floor. It has an orange head and a black body with alternating white stripes and dots along its length.
