How can we make schools healthier? | World Cancer Research Fund
Marking World Obesity Day and International School Meals Day, we explore how policy can improve food environments for children.
This World Obesity Day, Chloe, Senior Policy Research Manager @wcrf.org, explores what policy actions can be taken to foster healthier environments in and around schools to better protect children's health ππΈ
As always, there are valuable international examples to learn from!

@nestauk.bsky.social's analysis shows the UKβs junk food marketing restrictions risk being ineffective after being watered down by a sweeping brand exemption.
This adds urgency to our calls for the UK Gov to strengthen the policy by removing the brand exemption and bringing more products in scope.

A diet rich in wholegrains, nuts, fruit and veg could prevent 15m deaths a year and cut cancer rates.
Our Asst Dir Dr Helen Croker is quoted: "It's heartening that healthy diets can align with the most sustainable globally."
Now we need policy action! β

Baby food firms told to cut sugar and stop promoting snacks for under-ones
Manufacturers who do not make products healthier within 18 months may face action, the government says.
Today the UK Government published guidelines for commercial baby food.
This is a welcome step, as levels of salt and sugar in these products are far too high and many have misleading claims. But ultimately, we need mandatory guidelines to achieve meaningful change.

Good news! The UK Government has today launched its consultation on banning the sale of high-caffeine energy drinks to under-16s - delivering on a key manifesto promise.
@sustainweb.org has long campaigned for this step, which could prevent obesity in up to 40,000 children.

Why a pint a day puts men at risk of cancer
New research shows that only one in five men knows that drinking alcohol can increase your cancer risk β so how much is a safe amount?
Want to understand the specific cancer risks when consuming alcohol and how they increase? Does a pint a day make a big difference? Are women more at risk then men?
This great Telegraph article unpicks it all with @wcrf.org's Dr Helen Croker for Cancer Prevention Action Week.

Alcohol should have labels warning drinkers of cancer risks, charities say
Health organisations have written to Keir Starmer urging him to force drinks producers to include warnings
Alcohol causes cancer. Too few of us who regularly drink understand that. The minimum requirement should be a warning on products. That the industry objects shows how itβs in their commercial interests to play this information down and keep customers in the dark

Alcohol health warning labels: a public health perspective for Europe
