I remember when TOS invented slang for The Youths in The Way to Eden. Cringe and d.u.m.b. Oddly, I have no problem with slang use in SFA. Don't know why. Come to think of it, the cultural references that were the whole language in TNG Darmok were all local slang.

Romeo & Juliet is 400+ years old! The most adorable production of it I've seen was a community theater in a park, about the rivalry between our local high school football teams. Panthers & Cougars. The ball was the aftergame party. Juliet's light was her booklight for doing homework on her balcony.

I've wondered about that, too. Perhaps "typing" at a ship's console is different from typing words letter by letter. There may be a tap-swipe shorthand language that machines and officers share, like Morse Code in the days of the telegraph. Officers have to be able to translate it into speech.
