Absolutely baffling!
It remains my biggest beef with FromSoft games. Just let me opt out, that's all I ask. I want to play with my friends or NPC's and not have to think about some nut job rolling in and ruining the experience because they get their jollies by stomping on ants.
Ugh, I had the same issue with one of the dark souls. Trying to play with some friends, and having people just camp the first area and repeatedly dunking on a group of noobs felt so unhinged. We just stopped trying.

If you're playing Breath of Fire IV on GOG (you should) I highly recommend to follow the small tutorial below ("Forcing Point Sampling for Sharp Pixels") to remove the filter from the PC version and restore its gorgeous pixel-art!
