i had hidden an old blog post about Roger Schanck because I thought it was pretty mean of me. Turns out I shouldn't have hidden it bc he stinks. stick with your convictions folks
Two tropes in recipe videos that I abhor:
Feeding the dog some of your food (gross)
Squishing a sandwich or burger to make the juice / cheese ooze all over the place (also gross)
(Also not a fan scraping the knife across a piece of allegedly crispy food but whatever)
An orange feather within two script brackets. From the videogame Celeste
New tattoo
Ultra Bonus points for anyone that knows where it's from
This is genuinely such a great song. β€οΈ
Sllllloowwwwly getting back into writing after a hectic couple of years on the new job. It'll happen I promise

Ordered mine! Thanks to @erininthemorning.com for putting this together every year. π
Senator John Hickenlooper (D-CO) voted for this. You can support @senadorajulie.bsky.social in the primary to vote him out. bsky.app/profile/fasc...
aw man i spent the day working and writing to the "Hero" soundtrack and now I have to rewatch "Hero" for the 50th time
People don't talk enough about how "Bottoms" is the best high school movie of all time
(That's sneakily why I initially posted. I want to see if I can ID some of the most dreaded topics and think how to teach em less badly)
hmm why is that least favorite and/or annoying?
Oh man these are both good suggestions @k8nowak.bsky.social and @triangleman.bsky.social.
I've had students want to fist fight me on these concepts just this semester.
Informal poll - what is your least favorite / most annoying middle/high school math topic to teach? #mathsky #edusky
I'm ashamed to say it, but I got in a long argument with chatgpt about the area between the polar curves r=2 and r=2sin(theta).
We have agreed to disagree.
Gonna spend my extra hour tomorrow recreating all my Spotify playlists in Tidal
ah I see
nctm only lets you submit one session proposal?
Ooooooh I would LOVE that! I had toyed with the idea of making Calc Warm ups my summer project so this would save me a ton of time that I could spend destroying my backyard instead !
I do feel like Desmos Activity Builder might be a weekly (or nearly so) staple along with regular online homework.
I'm teaching an *asynchronous* online Calc class in the Spring Semester. This is the first time I've taught in this manner. Any resources/blogs/videos/books/models or just plain ol' suggestions are very VERY welcome. #edusky #mathsky #iteachmath
Oh yeah Liping Ma (1999?) is a biggun
NCLB and RTTT policy wise
Danny Martins address to nctm (2017?)
Schoenfeld 1988 - Good Teaching -- Bad Results
Deborah Ball's work around PCK
TIMSS
Dan Meyers Ted talk
Yeah it's tough to even definitively state whats PCK versus general pedagogy
Three venn diagrams 1) two circles overlapping 2) circle (pck) within a larger circle (ck) 3) same circle 4) question mark
Gonna engage some first year grad students in a conversation about content knowledge (CK) and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK).
Which Venn diagram do you think best represents our current understanding of the interaction between the two? Or what would your venn look like?

Update: tonight was the first time I've ever been watching TV and done the cover-the-eyes thing
Now that Alien: Earth is over I will now be cancelling Hulu.
Will I re-up if they make a season two? Only one way to find out!
only thing I'm certain of is he could use a big ol glass of settle down juice
Excerpt from Paul Lockhart's "A Mathematicians Lament" Teaching is not about information. Itβs about having an honest intellectual relationship with your students. It requires no method, no tools, and no training. Just the ability to be real. And if you canβt be real, then you have no right to inflict yourself upon innocent children. In particular, you canβt teach teaching. Schools of education are a complete crock. Oh, you can take classes in early childhood development and whatnot, and you can be trained to use a blackboard βeffectivelyβ and to prepare an organized βlesson planβ (which, by the way, insures that your lesson will be planned, and therefore false), but you will never be a real teacher if you are unwilling to be a real person. Teaching means openness and honesty, an ability to share excitement, and a love of learning. Without these, all the education degrees in the world wonβt help you, and with them they are completely unnecessary. Itβs perfectly simple. Students are not aliens. They respond to beauty and pattern, and are naturally curious like anyone else. Just talk to them! And more importantly, listen to them!
Reading Lockhart is a trip. I'll go from agreeing, to vehemently disagreeing and getting red and mad, and then agreeing again all within like a single paragraph.
