A bill with $40 million in rent relief is headed to the Minnesota Senate floor next week. Lead author @lindseyportmn.bsky.social crafted a bill that addresses the urgency of the moment.
Plus, the bill includes my provision to extend pre eviction notices from 14 to 30 days temporarily.
The Minneapolis City Council has voted to extend the required eviction notice timeline for renters, as some residents struggle to pay due to the immigration enforcement operation.
Statewide residential eviction filings 1/1 thru 3/4: ~4,630. Compared to same period 2025: ~4,824.
We're 4% below last year, but 2025 was highest filing totals we've ever seen.
With millions raised in mutual aid + gov't rent relief, extremely concerning we're nearly at same filing rate as last year.
Minneapolis City Council passes eviction notice extension from 30 days to 60. Same margin as in committee 7-5-1. Mayoral veto surely coming, and the votes aren't there to override it.
Voting no: Rainville, Vetaw, Warren, Shaffer, Palmisano
Abstention: Whiting

Shameful.
Non-profits are still governed by market logic and are not a substitute for the welfare state and robust, well-funded public housing
Folks at CURA found that even extending the pre-eviction notice period in Brookyn Center resulted in a drop in evictions relative to other similar places. I don't know what these other folks are talking about
thank you D.A. bullock for not singing at the city council meeting @bullycreative.bsky.social
Nonprofit developers also opposed advocacy efforts to include enactment of a statewide eviction moratorium to the Homes for All coalition state legislative agenda.
And they were successfulβit's not on the agenda: homesforallmn.org/h4a-2025-age...

I dunno, seems like at this point, bands that skip Minneapolis/St. Paul are cowards. They have plenty of time between Chicago and Austin on this tour.

God Ween Satan.
Ooof...approximately 182 evictions filed statewide last Friday. Highest filing day thus far in 2026. There were 179 filings the last day of 2025.

Even as ICE winds down its Twin Cities surge the economic disruption is still manifesting. So far Minnesota has not passed any housing aid, but even if it does, there are challenges in getting it out to the right people.

What an excellent opportunity for CM Vetaw & CM Warren to confirm they support housing stability for all of our North Minneapolis neighbors, while showing solidarity with impacted renters citywide. More time = fewer evictions & landlords get paid.
Full council vote likely 3/5 if approved by COW

The organizers told me last week they'd update their website to provide accurate & clear information about risks (translated into multiple languages), and it appears they have not done that, which is shameful.
Minnesota is facing serious and growing challenges in the midst of ongoing federal occupation and violence, and our communities are calling for meaningful change. Protest can be a powerful tool for challenging unjust systems and pushing leaders to act. At the same time, actions like rent strikes can carry significant legal and financial risks. Minnesota renters deserve clear information about those risks so they can make informed decisions about whether participating is the right choice for them. <HOME Line logo>
RISKS OF PARTICIPATING IN A RENT STRIKE -Threats/retaliation from landlord -Eviction / Forced move -Loss of a rental subsidy -Non-renewal of lease -Long-term credit and rental history problems --Owing additional money on top of your regular monthly payment (late fees, court fees, and attorney feesβcould be $400+) <HOME Line logo>
PEOPLE AT SIGNIFICANT RISK -Tenants who cannot afford to pay the additional fees associated with an eviction. -Tenants who have subsidies. -Tenants who would have difficulty attending court or representing themselves due to language, transportation, or employment barriers. -Tenants on a month-to-month lease or leases that may soon expire. -Tenants with roommates- if a roommate doesnβt pay their rent, the eviction is for all tenants. <HOME Line logo>
Head to our website to check out all the details about the risks associated with participating in a rent strike https://homelinemn.org/rentstrike If you would like to discuss your specific situation with an attorney, please use our Email an Attorney form. https://homelinemn.org/email

The level of anger normal Minnesota people have at their elected representatives is palpable. It's not about party, but the perceived failure of local/state electeds to do anything of substance to protect residents who pay their taxes and get left facing off alone against masked, armed men.
This is great, but can the Strib explain what a "rent moratorium" is? An eviction moratorium pauses eviction actions, but rent is still due. I'm assuming MPRB did not pause the obligation to pay rent.
