My book club theme for March is to read a Childhood Favorite.

I'm reading a Trixie Belden mystery. I loved Trixie and the Bob-Whites back in the day.

I babysat for a quarter per hour, saving my money to ride my bike up to the drug store to buy a Trixie Belden book for fifty-nine cents.

I had never heard of World Book Day before but apparently it's a British thing where people wear costumes inspired by books? That's charming and I certainly support it.

For World Book Day we are dressed as someone who read the book before the TV show got popular and are spending the day saying β€œwell actually in the book” until we are forcibly removed from the office.

Book Group

The last Thursday of every month was Book Group,
when the books would gather together to discuss Brian.

β€œIt’s no fun here any more,” remarked Bleak House, glumly.β€¨β€œWhy doesn’t he read us?” whined the Grapes of Wrath. β€œIt makes me so angry!” β€¨β€œI’m sure he only bought me so he can show me off to his friends,”
complained Ulysses, in a stream of self-consciousness.

β€œI bet he can’t even remember my name, The Idiot,”
muttered a voice from the Russian literature section.β€¨β€œThat’s because he avoids you like The Plague,” said another.β€¨β€œC’est vrai!” came a cry. β€œIt is like I do not exist.”

β€œLet’s not give up on him yet.” It was Brave New World.
After some Persuasion, they agreed to give him one last chance.β€¨β€œBe quiet!” cried Waiting for Godot with Great Expectations.β€¨β€œHere he comes now!”

Brian entered the room, with his phone.
He sat down and watched some videos of baby pandas falling over.
After an hour or so, he started googling cats dressed as celebrities.

On the shelf, the books waited with uncracked spines,
their silence speaking volumes.

The image behind the text is a border that is dark blue with gold stars with a black background with neon blue border. A different version of the same illustrated caticorn is curled up writing in the lower left corner.

It's unbelievable I never heard of Frances Perkins until now when I picked up the historical fiction book Becoming Madame Secretary by @stephaniedray.bsky.social

She was first woman cabinet member and created Social Security. Amazing woman!

I need to know more so I am off to the library today.

Hypatia of Alexandria (c. 370–415 CE), brilliant Greek mathematician, astronomer, and Neoplatonist philosopherβ€”the first woman known to head a major school of learning; she taught advanced mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy, advised civic leaders, and became a symbol of reason and intellectual freedom despite the era's gender and religious barriers.

The black-and-white engraved portrait shows her in profile, facing left, with a serene, contemplative expression; she has an elegant neck, large eyes, and elaborate braided hair styled in a high bun wrapped with a headband, rendered in fine line work with soft shading on a plain background.
