Right I know this is shocking, but guess what? The Oxford Congestion Charge is seeing LESS congestion and MORE people taking the bus. Try this one simple trick etc etc.

@leicsactivetravel
We are a group of people in Leicestershire who want better local transport options. Primarily safe walking wheeling and cycling routes to schools, shops and transport hubs. We want safer quieter local streets and see active travel as the key enabler.

But rail/bus fare increases have been higher than for motoring so to get the traffic flowing, shouldnβt you be thinking about what we should be incentivising people to do more of? Most people do have a choice in the way they travel, but itβs currently cheaper to drive. Transport strategy??

Today (11 March) local authorities have been given new powers to install side road zebra crossings at junctions across Wales.
This new legislation will give pedestrians priority at side streets and help support people to walk and wheel more.β―

Active travel saves the NHS at least Β£54 million a year just in Liverpool alone.
Other regions especially the north east need to sit up, take note and ramp up their efforts.

18-34 Londoners say they want to live where there's dockless hire, say cycling schemes & transport policy is important according to new Lime & SpareRoom surveys. 67% say cycling makes London more "liveable" & nearly 1/2 see cycling as a "green flag" for dating.

You can easily do it with buses that travel through villages via train stations. We donβt currently.
Fantastic to see my Mini Switzerland idea covered by the BBC.
It captures so many peopleβs imaginations because itβs both obvious, simple and yet - from where we are today - unspeakably radical.

"School Streets" have become a thing to watch. Even the loudest high-traffic neighbourhood trumpets will mumble "Except outside schools, of course", but this ignores how (1) kids don't live next to their schools and need to get to the School Street safely and (2) kids go to places that aren't school
To help retail businesses, shut the cars out of city centres.
Spanish bank BBVA analysis showed a 9.5% increase in retail takings after traffic restrictions in Madrid.
www.forbes.com/sites/carlto...
Keep this in mind when people claim cars mean business β closing Central #Madrid to cars over holidays resulted in a 9.5% boost in retail spending on its main shopping street: STUDY.
There was also a 71% drop in air pollution.

Iβve been trying to get a link from the Cloud Trail (NCN6) into our local town of Ashby de la Zouch for over 5 yrs now. With luck I may get a footpath for a section in the middle within a couple of years that is on dismantled Cloud railway line. The rest of the route is overgrown or woodland.
I wish we could have cycle paths like this between villages here in the UK. Often only a few miles away but only dangerous roads with no pavements between them. Villages have become islands of social isolation where teenagers canβt be independent and those that donβt drive are trapped.
Labour keeps talking about saving the high street without naming the real problem. Car dependency. You cannot fix town centres while planning everything around driving. The internet is permanent. Retail only survives where footfall is dense, local, frequent, and cheap to access.
The petrosexuals are still doing the βhaving services available near where you live so you donβt have to spend all your time and money driving everywhere all the time is communist actuallyβ thing. π€£

Cycle lanes and LTNs often attract loud opposition, making them seem deeply unpopular. But are they?
Across multiple studies (survey + analysis of 36k UK tweets), we find broad support - especially for well-designed, segregated lanes. Good quality cycle lanes benefit all!

Protected bike lanes FTW:
βSegregated cycle lanes β those physically separated from cars β were popular with both regular cyclists and regular drivers. Painted lanes on the road were far less liked, while the option of having no cycle lanes at all was the least popular with both groups.β
The view along a 2-way grey block paved cycle track with an uncontrolled pedestrian crossing in the foreground with rain gardens on both sides of the cycle track with seating at the end.
Off London's Tottenham Court Road, Bayley Street shows that cities change. Originally a signal controlled junction from a one-way street, contraflow cycling was added and then the junction filtered with a cycle track. Today the cycling is still there, but the area is now a little square.

And much of this could be parish council led with the support of volunteers.
Itβs a mix to show Britain is not broken. The highly visible things matter most: Level 1: litter, dirty road signs, grass verge parking damage, weeds on local roads/pavements). Level 2: Potholes, traffic routed away from residential streets. Pavement quality. Attractive central community space.
@amandahack.bsky.social @pauldaviesmp.bsky.social @jeevunsandher.bsky.social Paul is asking gov good questions about active travel. Pls talk to him. Leics is overrun with LOCAL traffic. Residents want safer quieter streets and safe routes to local schools, shops, transport hub. There is no other way
An excellent reminder that the best way to fix roads isnβt endless repairs, but rethinking how often - and why - we drive.
Trams are common in France, unlike in the UK.
We compared Oxford, Hull & Bournemouth with 3 similar French cities which have trams, to see what benefits trams could bring.
The findings were pretty exciting:

I think a contribution is more politically acceptable. When we had Β£2 bus tickets people did not complain about the cost. At Β£3 they did/are. Itβs not about making everything free. Itβs about making things affordable and fair for all.
So in 3 days have #cycled 153 miles 90% on safe infra even long distance in rural areas between cities/towns. No #lorries to deal w nor dangerous #driving +many car free town centres. A fave image is one young person helping another to keep up. Vlaardingen to Zwolle. @heidialexander.bsky.social
Of course we all want everything βfreeβ but we do have a large proportion of wealthy pensioners who have benefited from generous pensions and house price inflation. Surely a small contribution from them especially is fair and a pound is more politically acceptable.
β Traffic-induced high blood pressure, shouting kids and car seat faffing... Ever wondered why so many parents today drive the school run - despite almost universally hating it!?
