The Edge by Lucy Goacher, Book Review Clementine's sister, Poppy, has supposedly taken her own life. For six months Clementine accepts it as suicide and lives with the grief of not picking up the phone right before it happened. Then new information surfaces, and it starts to look a lot more like a serial killer. Almost right after, it becomes evident to Clementine that the killer might be one of the 3-4 men in her life. But which one? At different points in the book, I was convinced it could be any of them. Lucy Goacher keeps us guessing the entire time, pushing the story to a Agatha Christie style grand finale, after explaining all the bits and pieces leading to it.

Sunny Sofia I did 17k steps today, which included more than 1h of playing football with kids between 1st and 6th grade. We finished 6-6, which was not easy to the youngest and oldest participants. The youngest one saved a kick that was too strong and now wears an elastic stripe. The oldest had to run and get reminded that nobody is faster than the ball. I also went to the park for a longer than normal pull-ups exercise. The weather was almost summer-like. The day was more than fine but my actual hopes for it were to just sleep until noon and then have an afternoon nap. All that sun and blue sky arranged things otherwise. On the photos, San Stefano street, a sidewalk, and the Seven Saints Church.

The Revenge of the Damned, Book Review The Revenge of the Damned is something like the closing act of the story arc about Sten fighting against the Taan empire. Over the course of the previous books, Taan had the upper hand - more military power and superior leadership. However, the Empire had a lead in manufacturing capacity and energy production. In book 5, the clash between the Empire and the Taan has already passed its inflection point. At this stage it’s less a question of who wins but more like when and how Sten's boss wins. There’s just one small complication: Sten has been captured and now has to somehow win the war from prison.

Model Kittyzen It's not that the focus or the quality of the photo is that great but I think this is one of my best cat photos lately. Such a charming cat. She's one of the yard cats next to our co-working space. Here's the kitten with a friend, who I previously featured here. They're probably cousins.

Commentary on Brandolini’s Law Brandolini defined the following law: The amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than that needed to produce it. It normally applies to arguments and misinformation. Now that generating content with AI is so easy, the orders of magnitude have changed. Both the statement and the refutation can be forged very quickly and people believing stuff on the Internet just look more and more foolish. So, while trying to figure out what to even think about this, I came up with the following commentary on Bardolini's Law.

Roar We almost never see large aircraft visiting the Sofia Airport. When I heard the roar, I thought it's a helicopter or some US military aircraft with a hundred propellers. Looked up, and I was genuinely surprised to see a Jumbo Jet. We had A380 landing here once and it made it to the news. This would be the first time I hear 747 landing in Sofia. Also, flying over the city center with full throttle, probably not the best. It's a flight from Sofia to Djibouti. I couldn't find any information about it but I would put my money that it's an evacuation route for people who want to leave the Gulf area.

Liberation Day Today is Bulgaria’s national holiday. Happy liberation day to all of us! 🇧🇬 Unfortunately, we couldn’t visit the celebration this year. We used to have fireworks, which the kids loved and gave us a reason to go to the ceremony. The fireworks were cancelled a year or two ago to not upset the animals. At least fluff wasn’t disturbed.

Two Reps This is my first documented pull-up with my feet not touching the ground even slightly. When I set an annual goal of one pull-up, it felt like a stretch goal. Doing it in 2027 was quite fine for me. I haven't been to the gym since 2019, more than 6 years ago. I haven't done any upper body training other than carrying kids since then. I've also gained weight. But while I wonder if I should update the goal or blame the steps, here's a video.

February in Books February didn't bring any particularly interesting books to my shelves. I was tempted to skip the monthly summary this month but it would break a long tradition. My alternative idea for a blog post was to write about 4-dimensional spheres. Unfortunately, that idea needs more research and lost. After all, have you seen a 4-dimensional sphere? Best Fleet of the Damned by Allan Cole and Chris Bunch - space opera that shot above its weight. I awarded it with 5*. Looking back, it's probably a 4* that just looked so much nicer than the series of disappointments before it.

Knee I did my first true long walk since I bumped my knee into a concrete trash can a week ago. 10K steps in one go and the knee held well. I dodged a bullet this time. However, I lost my shape, feeling as if I did 20K, not 10K. The bin is now out of the way, hopefully it doesn't hurt anyone else. And speaking of trash, a the gallery below shows a pigeon eating steak, Wartburg 1.3, and a cat, resting on a pillow. Sofia is not very clean under our current leadership, whose battle with the cleaning companies shows.

Criticism In How to Win Friends & Influence People, Dale Carnegie argues that criticism is futile. Criticism opens the gates to hell, little devils fly back, criticize, gossip, and destroy morale. Abilities wither under criticism; they blossom under encouragement. And yet, walking around all day with your zipper open while your friends politely say nothing isn't kindness either. So while we search for the middle were kindness wins without criticism, remember this cat. This is the most critical cat in my recent catblogging history. I tried to blog about her several times and didn't know what to say.

Rusty the cat A story about the 33-year-old cat Rusty took Reddit by storm. Rusty passed away at the age of 33, making him into top 10 of the oldest cats in the recorder cat history. The poster submitted proof to the mods of r/cats that Rusty was real. People rushed to update Wikipedia's list of oldest cats, expressed condolences, sent love and wishes. The post generated 134K likes and was probably viewed by most of the non-bot Redditors. Unfortunately, Rusty was AI slop. Rusty: The post and the bot that submitted it got deleted.

Fleet of the Damned by Chris Bunch and Allan Cole The resourceful captain Sten joins the navy and leads a small group of spaceships in the battle against the Tahn. The genre is a retro space opera with dumb computers and ships that need hundreds of people to be operated. The story takes a sharp turn from what we saw in the previous three. It is not light anymore, not fun. It's also not clear where we are heading. Things get from bad to worse with no improvement possible in sight. The problems presented are interesting, relevant, and engaging. The level of action reminds of…

Muted Reddit’s auto-subscription after it became intolerable Reddit somehow detected that I'm interested in AI and Data and auto-subscribed me to several hundred AI and Data subreddits. This turned their feed to an endless slop machine. Every single pre-IPO hype post or or doom prophecy would pop on my feed multiple times per subreddit, 5 if it was Sam Altman's. Multiply that by at least 100 AI subreddits and you get the idea. You are scrolling and scrolling without seeing a single cat. Claude this, Sam Altman that, Anthropic this, I vibe coded this genius thing, and then Sam Altman again.

Arch Enemy has a new lead singer, Lauren Hart Sounds like the departure of Alissa White-Gluz worked well for both parties. I already blogged how Alissa's new work feels more like her, fresh and different. And here we are, Arch Enemy with Lauren Hart, performing as if she's always been there. Their music sounds like a fantasy novel with dragons, hordes of orcs, and black magic.

Limping Park I managed to do 3K steps today. My knee is better, only hurts when walking. The pain at rest is gone. However, I think I won't be able to do the daily steps challenge for another week or so. Meanwhile, the winter decided that it's not over yet and surprised us with snow. The weather forecast says it will be summer within 3-4 days. Not sure who to trust on that. Sofia has this tendency to stay cold when the nearby mountains are covered with snow, and they will be for another month.

Why so serious I had a health scare today. Bumped my knee into a concrete trash can right outside a playground. I suspect making steps won't be possible for some time but at least nothing is broken, other than my plans. I moved the damn trash can out of the way. Whoever put it right at the exit of the playground was evil. Here's a cat photo from my only walk for the day. This is a mighty fluff, species unknown.

Trabant A Mercedes is trying to overtake a Trabant on the highway. The speed is high, way over the limit. The Mercedes is in the red, driving parallel to the Trabant. At the last moment, the Trabant slows down slightly. The Mercedes driver rolls down his window and shouts to the Trabant driver: "Now what?""Now third gear." - shouts the other driver back and disappears ahead. The photo features a cat. Can you find her?

Rep I set myself a goal to do one pull-up by the end of the year. I made some progress yesterday. My one rep is not a clean pull-up. The grip is neutral, and my legs are touching the ground from the moment I started pulling. I didn't jump, but it's not entirely clear from the video if I really pulled all of my body weight completely unassisted by my legs. In any case, I'm not too far off. So far, the number of injuries exceeds the number of pull-ups. Honestly, I didn't believe I'd get that far, let alone so soon.

AI Singularity I'm a software engineer. My job mostly boils down to three things: Understanding a requirement and turning it into tasks Implementing those tasks or monitoring the implementation by others Querying data about the project - events, stats, trends and such About a year ago, I switched entirely to AI-first engineering or vibe coding. Essentially, I let AI do most of the engineering work and mostly review the output it and provide feedback. By doing that, I felt a gradual increase of my output. At first, the gains were modest and it wasn't uncommon to lose more time with AI than I would've lost without it.

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky The battle with this giant book was real. I started it months ago, then restarted it around New Year and completed over 10 books in between. The third attempt this month finally ended in victory. Two storylines alternate with slightly different characters each time. One follows a community of intelligent spiders. The other follows the last surviving humans, flying mostly frozen in a thousand-year-old spaceship called Gilgamesh. It’s no secret they’re heading for a crash. The deus ex machina pulls the strings toward a carefully arranged finale we can see from the orbit. I liked the spiders. I didn’t like much else. From what I've heard, the second part is easier to read. 3/5.
