Hey Gen Z, if you thought the Menendez Brothers story was wild, back in the late 70's the biggest story on TV was the Iran Hostage Crisis. Covered on every outlet for 444 days straight. Then it turned out Republicans prolonged it in order to win an election. Then they sold the bad guys weapons.
In other words, in the late 70's and early 80's, the most important people in the Republican Party were doing illegal weapons deals with a country that the Republican Party now tells us has been an "imminent threat" all along.
But even if they could accuse Reagan of committing crimes, his vice president George HW Bush would have pardoned him, just like he pardoned all of the people who could have implicated Bush in the scheme. (Did you know Bush was the former head of the CIA?)

Reagan knew about the illegal sale of weapons to Iran and wanted money to go to Nicaragua, but investigators couldn't prove he knew about the whole illegal scheme because he couldn't remember important details, likely because he was suffering from Alzheimer's.
