Happy birthday!
For years, I have been working on a documentary project about the history of children's birthdays, and I am again putting out a call to anyone willing to share photos and videos from their childhood birthday for us to possibly use in the film. More details below!
Sending you a PM.
@yourewrongabout.bsky.social Your three-part series on Keiko healed something in me. I also thought that the project to rewild Keiko was a heartbreaking failure. Brianna made a compelling case that we DID improve his quality of life and learned a lot to help other whales in the process. Thank you.
NO NO NO YOU DONโT

I mean, I did when I worked in publishing, but my AWP experience was *very* different from the average attendee. For me, it was a chance to finally meet the authors whose books I'd been working on for the past few years. I looked forward to that part every year and still kind of miss it a little.
Not having kid myself, I can only imagine that the "sometimes people love each other very much, and they do the best they can, but it still doesn't work out" conversation is a much, much harder conversation to have with kids than letting them know that queer people exist.
To the best of my knowledge, my friends have had exactly one difficult conversation with their kids about my relationship:
"Are we going to visit Uncle Ron and Uncle [redacted] this year?"
"No, sweetheart. Uncle Ron and Uncle [redacted] are no longer together."
That's all I'll say about that.
Thank you!
Hi #EarlyModern Bluesky - did you know that someone brilliant has built working printing presses using Lego and they are trying to get enough supporters so that Lego will release it as a kit?
They look so cool!

A tray of lumpy apricot-white chocolate scones
Baking Day: Supplemental:
I let the dough get a little too warm/overworked and didn't have the stove hot enough for these scones, but they're still delicious and have a nice texture even if they're a bit misshapen. It's a good reminder that not everything has to be Instagram-perfect to be beautiful.
More about Cornell courtesy of Bella Somoza's research: blogs.cornell.edu/manystories/...
Picked up Documenting Rebellions (Sheffield 2020) again this morning and discovered that Cornell had gay student association pre-Stonewall.
I feel like the history of LGBTQ+ activism in Western NY has been severely neglected. There was a whole network of Gay Liberation Fronts on college campuses.
Ah. Looks like it's time for my biannual post about how I hate Daylight Savings Time and we should just make standard time permanent.
I hate Daylight Savings Time.
We should just make standard time permanent.

Baking Day: Part II
Totally fair!
Do you remember the title of the memoir? Because that sounds very much up my alley.
Happy 34th anniversary to the original Sailor Moon anime!

A slightly browner than golden-brown cherry pie
Baking Day: Part I
The top crust got just a little bit dark for the cherry pie, but the bottom crust looks perfect.
A dwarf mongoose, a rodent creature like a mongoose but shorter and like it came out of a cartoon, sits atop a tree trunk
Hey have you guys ever seen a dwarf mongoose? Because I hadnโt and it changed my life
I love her/him/them.
Alt text because I've never seen that quote before and I love it: "We wanted every episode to be four things: funny, sad, strange and beautiful." -Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi
โAdopting a queered anger with intention, cognition, and thoughtfulness [โฆ] we can tap into a nondualistic, mature, productive, and attractive affect, avoiding the merely tantrum-like, destructive, and repulsive anger of tyrants.โ
(This is a short article aimed at academics, but it is very accessible for a general audience. Highly recommended.)
Todayโs reading: โIn the face of
pressures to put others at ease, it is more essential than ever to reclaim the integrity and validity of queer rage, both individually and collectively.โ
Thinking about collective anger, grief & shame as a demand for accountability.
If you took $1 billion and gave it to the endowment of a different small college each day, they could each provide a free college education to several hundred students per year in perpetuity. Instead we are using that money to bomb schools and kill students in Iran, for no clearly stated purpose.
