ICOM2026 β Symposia
Symposia The parallel symposia during ICOM2026 have been a work of the mycorrhizal community, representing submissions from >50 researchers from all stages of career from 18 countries. We are prβ¦
There are still a few weeks left to submit your abstract for @icom2026.bsky.social in Cairns, Australia. Consider applying to our special session on βMycorrhizae and biogeochemical cycles under global changeβ (Session 23), co-organized by Prof. Tessa Camenzind and I.

Evidence for resource transfer via common endophyte networks
Fungal symbionts play essential roles in ecosystems influencing plant development and biodiversity. Mycorrhizal fungi can form common mycorrhizal networks (CMNs) where a fungus connects the roots of a...
Weβve posted a new preprint providing evidence that endophytic fungi facilitate resource transfer through common mycelial networks. A neat aspect of our study is that we measured fungal functional changes when connected to more than one plant, not just the plants!

Decoupled responses of mycorrhizal fungal communities and function to recurrent wildfire
Understanding the effects of fire on ecosystem function is critical for both above- and belowground processes. Mycorrhizal fungi play essential roles β¦
Great new article out by Solomon Maerowitz-McMahan on fungal production, composition, and fire response. Solomon presented this work at our mycorrhizal session last year the @egu.eu meeting (you can still submit to present your work at our 2026 session).

Academia is just a job - Nature Human Behaviour
Working in academia can be stressful. Laurel Raffington suggests treating it as βjust a jobβ to reduce performance pressure and advocate for structural improvements.

I think thatβs a great point. I agree - especially considering stoichiometry, pH, and competition differences between those substrates. Probably bacterial interactions also modulate this quite a lot.

Coming to the @egu.eu General Assembly in 2026? Consider submitting an abstract to our mycorrhizae session if you are working on these organisms and their linkages to ecosystem functioning. Last year, this new session was a huge hit, so let's make year two even better!

The role of ectomycorrhizal functional diversity in mediating soil carbon cycling under global change
Click on the article title to read more.
A fun commentary with @christinakaiser.bsky.social inspired by a very cool paper in New Phyt by @fungidownunder.bsky.social et al. showing that EcM fungal functional traits affect soil C responses to elevated CO2. EcM species and traits really matter!
