Marsupials previously thought extinct for millennia discovered in New Guinea
The chances of finding one mammal species thought to be lost was βalmost zeroβ and finding two is βunprecedentedβ, biologist Tim Flannery says
Extraordinary story, although Lazarus Species is a bit of a misnomer as Lazarus was supposed to have been properly dead but these little chaps have just been keeping their heads down. And who can blame them for that?

2:1 to the Arsenal. Of course I really canβt stand Chelsea, but I have to say I quite like Liam Rosenior - I wish him success (just not against Arsenal). Interesting interview from him after the game. #arsche

A 33 year-old pair of black, rubberized Zeiss binoculars on a wood table-top. They've seen a lot.
I'm thinking of finally replacing my Zeiss Dialyt 10x40Bs after 33 years (even though they still work fantastically...). I'm sticking with Zeiss, so who has recommendations (& pros & cons) between Zeiss Victory SF 10x42 & Zeiss SFL 10x40?

What do you think of the Zeiss SFLs? I'm thinking of getting the 10x40s. They would be my first new binoculars since 1993 when I bought a pair of Zeiss Dialyts instead of furniture with the moving allowance WWF gave me when I relocated from Geneva to DC.

Wondering if any @iucnwcpa.bsky.social or CCSG members are planning to attend the Species on the Move conference in Taiwan in April? If so, we'd love to hear about it afterwards - maybe even organize a webinar for those who are interested? Let us know.

βοΈThis dryland study unveils diverse drought resistance strategies in annuals and shows that in open areas, more drought-resistant populations are more stable over time. Under extreme aridity, delayed germination emerges as a key driver of stability

Botswana shows how smarter cattle herding can save lions, reopen ancient wildlife pathways
The lions that roamed the plains of northern Botswana were dying. One by one, the big cats were succumbing to poisoned bait planted by exasperated villagers. The lions had been chipping away at their ...
Restoring traditional herding practices in northern #Botswana has led to a huge decrease in cattle predation + retaliatory lion poisonings.
More #lion cubs are now surviving, with the lion population in northern Botswana up 50% over the past 4 years.

30 percent of Alitoβs individual stock portfolio is directly tied to fossil fuels.
The Supreme Court has decided to hear a major climate case against fossil fuel companies
Alito has not recused himself, despite owning nearly $200,000 in fossil fuel stocksβincluding in Phillips 66 and ConocoPhillips, which are being sued in cases that would be directly affected by a SCOTUS ruling

Three terracotta statues of Orpheus, sitting on a stool and playing his instrument, and two sirens, half human and half bird, standing in front of him.
A highlight of early Hellenistic Taranto is the stunning terracotta group of Orpheus and the Sirens, recently returned from the Getty to Italy. While striking, their original setting, possibly on a funerary monument, remains a mystery.

In case you missed it: my state bird story is out! Climate change means that millions of Americans will lose the chance to see their state #birds in their neighborhoods. Serious birders may scoff, but this points to greater issues regarding what's been called "the extinction of experience." πͺΆ
