Matchmaking Between Condensed Matter and Quantum Foundations, and Other Stories: My Six Decades in Physics I present some rather selective reminiscences of my long career in physics, from my doctoral work to the present. I do not spend time on topics such as the nuclear magnetic resonance behavior of 3He, ...

The following quote in the preface of my PhD thesis is from my favourite essay by him:

"Sometimes what one does not know is as important as what one does!"

Just this past Friday I printed out some notes by the great Anthony Leggett and was struck (for the umpteenth time) by his effortless writing style and the lucidity of his thoughts.

Unfortunately I learned today that this great voice of condensed matter passed away over the weekend: RIP Sir Tony πŸ’

Suno, AI Music, and the Bad Future
Suno, AI Music, and the Bad Future YouTube video by Adam Neely

I started watching this treatise on AI and music creation as a break from research, but I think there's a huge parallel here with the use of AI in scientific research.

(I have no moral conclusions about this yet, but just something to chew on)

"I would give like a 50% chance that in two or three years, theoretical physicists will mostly be replaced with AI. Brilliant people like Nima Arkani-Hamed or Ed Witten, AI will be generating papers that are as good as their papers pretty autonomously."

Ominous, but I can believe it 🫠

By contrast, I tried to do this with my paid version of ChatGPT earlier this year, and it just could not get it right, no matter how much I tried to nudge it in the right direction.

I'm not even paying for Antigravity, and it got everything right pretty much the first time!

I've been using Antigravity, Google's AI powered IDE, for the last week and I'm blown away by how much it has sped up my research. 🀯

I'm using it to do some tedious Bogoliubov-de Gennes calculations on a 2D lattice, and I've only had to make small corrections to its code so far.

Hello Bluesky, I just started a new position so I thought I'd break my looong hiatus: in November, I started working as an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow at Uppsala University in Sweden πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ͺ

You can find me in Prof. Annica Black-Schaffer's group, working on theories of unconventional superconductivity!

A bunch of physics paper titles containing the word 'Hell' mashed up with the 'This is fine' meme of a dog sitting surrounded by flames. I'm the second panel of the comic, the dog is now saying 'I wonder what the nature of the electric activity is here?'.

The joke here is that 'Hell' should actually be read 'He-II' or "Helium 2", an old name for superfluid Helium-4.

My current hobby is finding papers where (presumably devil-worshipping 😈) physicists investigate the material properties of Hell.

I now have a research website! πŸ₯³

Granted, it's a quick and dirty port over from my old UAlberta site, but it's functional. I have grand visions for putting a bunch of resources on there (templates for CV, thesis, papers etc) but we'll see when I get around to that πŸ˜…

I just sat down in a chair, and was supported because of trillions of quantum-mechanical interactions between the particles in my butt and the particles in the seat. This lends credence to the notion that quantum computation occurs in many parallel universes, an idea first propo

And I followed up by asking 'What type of solid is a dipolar supersolid?' based on our recent paper about supersonic shear waves (arxiv.org/abs/2410.16060).

I'll make a thread about this paper very soon!
