Cascadia Daily News email newsletter image, with the text below a heading of "Business Matters with Frank Catalano":
Growing new tech companies SWIFTly: A spark near a forested area is usually a bad idea. Unless that spark is one of business innovation.
That admittedly dad-joke-adjacent thought crossed my mind as I wound my car through worn historic buildings that still dominate the tree-filled former campus of Northern State Hospital in Skagit County. Yet as I passed a tennis court on Northsound Drive, a modern sign on a newer one-story building came into view: βIRC Lab-SWIFT,β it declared in large green letters.
Iβd come to check on the progress of this initiative of the Northwest Innovation Resource Center, a Bellingham-based nonprofit that helps entrepreneurs build innovative businesses in Northwest Washington. It had planted its latest physical shared space on the inside edge of what is today called SWIFT (Sedro-Woolley Innovation for Tomorrow) Center, run by the Port of Skagit.
Fusion energy. Sustainable aviation fuel. Ocean monitoring.
All in a shared workspace and tech startup lab tucked into a forested area of Skagit County, WA from the Northwest Innovation Resource Center.
My first Business Matters newsletter for @cascadiadaily.com, available to subscribers today.

Happy Birthday β to us!
Itβs a notable day in our Bellingham newsroom: Today marks the fourth anniversary of CDN Vol. I, Issue I, our print newspaper, which hit the streets and coffee shops of Whatcom and Skagit on March 2, 2022.
We had been online for more than a month by then, but the rolling of the presses in Mount Vernon was a special occasion. Particularly so for me, a veteran of four decades in the news business who still had some amount of ink flowing through his veins up on launching CDN.
Includes a photo of CDN's Jaya Flanary holding up a copy of the first printed CDN at Skagit Press in Mount Vernon, WA.
It's a doubly auspicious day for @cascadiadaily.com: the first subscriber-only newsletter (this regular one from Exec Editor @ronjudd.bsky.social looks Inside CDN) and the fourth Cascadia Daily News print anniversary.
More focused newsletters, and more hyper-local coverage, ahead for Northwest WA.

Bring On Defunct: The iPod Enthralls Young Music Listeners
Truly remarkable that the NYT devoted this much space to a piece about nostalgia for owning one's own music, via obsolete iPods, without even a nod to the world of cheaper, better digital music players that has never gone away outside the closed Apple universe. www.nytimes.com/2026/03/01/t...

My thoughts on Stephen A Smith potentially running for president are:
Could we please stop fucking electing celebrities and get back to the business of running the country with boring people who just want to do a good job.
Thanks

If an increasing unpopular leader, known for shaping reality w/ lies, wanted to subvert democracy, would they: A) complain that the polls are βfake newsβ, B) threaten polling organizations into silence, C) sow distrust in election results, or D) find ways to disenfranchise voters of the other party?
