Glad to bring this into the conversation at the Infant and Maternal Mortality Conference today.

The legislative session may be over, but our work doesn't stop when the General Assembly heads home! #TeamInstitute is at the 2026 Hoosiers Vote Summit to hear about the voting landscape in Indiana and learn how we can help more Hoosiers "Get IN-VOLVED" in civic engagement.
And here it is - the homelessness bill heads to Governor’s desk.
😡 SB 1 is headed to Governor Braun’s desk. 😡
➡️ In spite of opposition from more than 80 organizations and hundreds of calls and emails.
More red tape. Less health care. More medical debt. Less groceries.
“Baffling” is certainly one way to describe the House’s choice not to adopt some simple changes to SB 1 to reduce the number of Hoosiers who go uninsured or hungry.

Describing it as “compassionate,” enough House members voted “yes” to adding a misdemeanor, fines, & possible jail time to the obstacles facing a homeless person to return it to the senate for a final vote.
It barely passed - because of you. It’s not over. Take action below.
😡 SB 1 just passed the House. We are not done fighting to protect access to food and health care.
Keep those messages coming!

🚦 Stop scrolling for a moment. 🚦 What's on the line here?
Less health care. More medical debt. Less food. More red tape. Less dignity. More paperwork to prove you're sick.
➡️ If you haven't spoken up yet about SB 1, please make a call or use the link below.
We never know when an accident or injury could upend our lives, so we all need a strong safety net to make sure that if that happens, we can still meet our basic needs.
Food & health care are critical - and SB 1 will make them harder to access. Speak up: tinyurl.com/ysyppjyw
🚫 Don't let the Indiana House of Representatives add fines and jail time to the obstacles Hoosiers might have to navigate to access stable housing. Raise your voice on SB 285! THEY WILL VOTE EARLY NEXT WEEK.

Just wow. The House just lowered the amount a family can save while on SNAP.
They also declined to classify someone with cancer as medically frail & to require 3 months of work requirement compliance BEFORE a person can be eligible for HIP.
SB 1 is cruel. Urge your lawmakers to vote no.
In a few moments, House members will hear SB 285, adding misdemeanors, fines, & jail time to the obstacles a homeless individual might have to navigate to find stable housing.
Testimony is just one way to make your voice heard. Here’s another: actionnetwork.org/letters/sb-2...

On this day of love, our hearts are broken: We learned today that medical debt legislation (SB 85) will die in the Indiana House of Representatives. 💔
“Agreeing to this conformity would be authorizing a new tax expenditure with newly allocated money that exists outside of our enacted budget,” said Olivia Smith, with the Indiana Community Action Poverty Institute.

It was so great to have #CommunityAction in the statehouse! These amazing directors and their teams are transforming lives and communities - through service AND advocacy.
“Medical debt isn't a choice. It's a price people pay for getting sick," said Dave Almeida, with Blood Cancer United, telling those gathered that his was one of about 25 organizations that have worked together to try and find solutions to medical debt.
Debt collectors 1, Hoosiers Struggling with Bills 0
Sometimes a good bill dies quietly, just by not appearing on the calendar. That appears to be the fate of SB 197.
YOU don’t have to be quiet, though. Let Chairman Jeter know you wish he had put struggling Hoosiers first: h88@iga.in.gov
“This is Mark. This is what #medicaldebt looks like. This is the one time he held his granddaughter before he died.”
Today’s powerful press conference was a call to action for lawmakers. Do not end this session without protecting Hoosiers.
🖊️ Sign on TONIGHT to call on policymakers to protect Hoosiers facing medical debt. We'll be sharing this letter with members of the media at a press conference tomorrow (Wednesday) at noon. 🖋️

We talked about #paidparentalleave for K-12 staff in House Education today. If Georgia, Alabama, Utah, Tennessee, and many many other states can do it - so can we! In fact, how about paid parental leave for all parents?
Joining Feeding Indiana’s Hungry to meet with Chairman Thompson about SNAP and Medicaid this morning.
By adjusting two numbers in Indiana law, SB 197 helps prevent an overdue bill from becoming a financial catastrophe - and is a critical move in an affordability crisis.

We are testifying on 4 bills today:
🏥 To make sure the tax benefits we give non-profit hospitals come back to us in community benefits
🩺 To protest additional red tape added to SNAP & Medicaid
👶 To increase funding for childcare
💵 To make thoughtful decisions about which tax breaks we offer
One reason we are fighting for medical debt protections: a new study finds that 37.9% of respondents experienced financial hardship following surgeries. Surgeries were also associated with an 8-fold increase in yearly out-of-pocket spending. Read the full study: jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...
“[SB 197] is a good bill in our perspective. It’s about people who are working…and they are also dealing with overdue bills.“ Check out discussion of SB 197 in the Indiana Catholic Conference podcast: www.indianacc.org/ican-podcast
So disappointing! Utilities are a top issue we are hearing about from right now, but a majority just rejected an amendment to GRADUALLY reduce taxes on utility service.

Parents who need assistance affording a safe and nurturing place for their child when they go to work may finally see some new support: Up to $300 million in reserves could be used for childcare under a bill that just passed the Indiana Senate.
