In the game I'm working on I'm thinking of having 12 skills and make them relatively broad. Like everything you'd associate with a rogue (stealth, pickpocketing, impersonation) are just one skill. If a skill's utility is so narrow the GM has to go out of their way to make it relevant its too narrow.

Age of Sigmar has an interesting balance with it's zone based combat. I personally prefer zones over range bands which I think don't really do much strategically and are harder to track.

I like the idea of a mechanic where instead of resources starting full and dwindling they go up over the course of the encounter. A way to represent how in anime fights tend to escalate rather then die down.
