I think to some degree, people who see the mascot underestimate its importance. Your browsing experience getting interrupted is a high-tension situation, especially because it shows up for only a moment and you don't know what's happening. The mascot is there to defuse the tension.

In all seriousness, I find the claim that the test has been passed dubious. Every single instance of people claiming this they give the LLM a lot of leeway, and don't actually perform a proper adversarial test. By its very nature, passing the test as originally prompted requires general-AI.
I've yet to see any supposed claim of GPT passing the Turing Test account for telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, and psychokinesis. The original paper clearly states that this needs to be accounted for.
So the Turing Test/Imitation Game is pretty clearly off the table as a method to suss out consciousness. What do you think should replace it?
I think Turing was onto something with the idea of looking for equivalence, rather than defining consciousness. Just turns out the test conditions aren't it.
