Another point worth mentioning is that there are a few minor names in Ireland named after battle sites in the Crimean War. Such names sometimes commemorate battles but can also be a humorous reference to some local argument or conflict. 'The Crimea' in Tipperary www.duchas.ie/ga/cbes/4922...

It is worth noting here that there was some immigration to Ireland from Eastern Europe in the nineteenth century as a result of pogroms in the Russian Empire. For example, in the 1911 Census, several people in Waterford City gave “Russia” or “Russian Poland” as their country of origin.

We would not like to speculate as to what the origin of the name is given the lack of historical references. However, the explanation given by Power in Place-names of the Decies, and in the Schools’ Folklore Collection, i.e., that the name comes from a Russian family, seems quite plausible.

We would expect Ros na Sí to give an anglicised form along the lines of *Rosnashee and for this to develop to Russianside would be very unusual. There would have to be some evidence for this development for it to be considered as a possibility.

The Placenames Branch doesn’t have any further information on the local name 'Russianside' in the townland of Cheekpoint, #1411553 in County Waterford. We consider it to be very unlikely that Russianside is derived from Ros na Sídhe (Ros na Sí in modern Irish spelling).
