Welcome Queen! A new queen bumblebee on one of her first forays. She’ll soon find a place to build a nest, often underground to start her new hive. (Hunt’s Bumblebee)

1. I adore paeonies, from the moment of their rather sinister looking emergence to seed set. This is a P. officinalis, Common Paeony, inherited in my tiny garden, and apparently indestructible. But each year it serves to remind me of those I have loved and lost.
Let’s talk neonicotinoids. These deadly pesticides are so widespread that they are exposing native pollinators and birds to a lot of poison. They’re likely present in any big box retail that sells garden plants. Please use organic local garden shops who could really use your support. ASK them too!
A red-tailed hawk. Bright red tail, dark head, and dark primaries.
A Red-tailed Hawk this afternoon.
I'm very much looking forward to reading this new book.

A bright yellow oriole with black wings and face and throat feathers is perched at a red feeder. The bird’s wings have a white bar.
Due to the wind, I’m hearing the orioles more than seeing them, but this handsome guy did show up a few minutes ago.

A Robin having a splashy bath in a lake. The bird has an orange chest, brown wings and a white throat. The bird is looking at the camera and there are water droplets in the air.
A Rusty Blackbird in the water near the shore. The bird is rusty brown with brown and black wings. The beak is open and there are water droplets in the air.
A Pipit in the water looking down at it's reflection. The bird is mottled light and dark brown. There is some black in the wings and on the tail feathers.
3 Bohemian Waxwings on a round green water bowl. One is standing on a rock in the water and two are on the edge of the bowl. The bird on the left is leaning forward with the wings open.

This describes me perfectly.
Step over ants, put worms back in the grass, rescue baby caterpillars, release spiders back into your garden, open windows for bees to fly home. They are all little souls that deserve a life too.
Congratulations! They sometimes come through here in big flocks and they actually nest in wetlands throughout the western US.

You can even see a hint of their darker primaries hidden under the folded wings.
A shore bird white below and brown above a thickish bill and dark legs. It was very foggy on the beach.
🪶 ID help please, of possible. I saw this bird today on Top Sail Island NC. It was foggy and from afar at first I thought Am Oystercatcher but when I got closer I saw it was not. The thickish bill is throwing me off. Anyone have any suggestions?
Willet because of tall stature, big thick bill, grayish legs, and they like to forage in the surf like small sandpipers. They kind of appear like an oversized greater yellowlegs.
Willet!
A macro photo of a cream-colored crab spider clinging to the tip of a cream-colored flower petal, against a blue sky background. The spider is far left in the frame; in the lower right the flower shows dark red and greenish-yellow stripes toward the petals' centers.

My hand with pink nail polish holding a book called “Hawaiian Insects and their Kin” outside in front of a plumeria flower. There is a butterfly and spider on the cover.
I went to Hawai'i and all I got was this stupid book on insects 😏

Least Sandpipers have short legs so the water isn't very deep but everything is relative. Standing in the Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge #Alaska. Maybe on the way back? 🪶

Amorpha means ‘without form’ since this genus’ flowers have only one petal, unlike most "pea-shaped" flowers, missing the wing and keel petals.
