The crazymaking thing about AI being pushed all throughout my grad school is that even when professors make the caveat that you have to double check the answer AI gives you — we are literally in school to do the intellectual work of getting to the point where we can doublecheck the AI answer!!!!
ai is driving people to suicide, but it also destroys the wages and working conditions of multiple industries without adding real value, so it's impossible to say if it's bad or not

yep I agree, focusing only on making things fair in terms of academic honesty has been super detrimental to AI debates in academia and it really shows how we keep dissociating the world around us from the object of our research

My doomer-worry about AI is not that the LLMs become omnipotent and take over the world but that the wealthy and powerful use it as a means to consolidate power and marginalize or lay off skilled workers and also everything about our technological and political and social life gets worse
To be entirely clear: every "AI" company should have bright red ethical lines against things like genocide and weapons systems and surveillance and consent violations and shepherding an encroaching fascism, and those lines should be placed way earlier than anthropic and openAI's seem to be.

We would never say that showing up for football practice is merely busy work because you're just doing it for your coaches.
College is really expensive. (TOO expensive, IMO, but I don’t make the rules.)
If a student is going to insist on aggressively not learning a fucking thing in college by actively seeking out the cheat-on-everything machine, then that student just took on a ton of debt for nothing.

Educating people about their “rights” has to be balanced by educating people about the realities regarding their rights.
We do not get out of fascism by saving ourselves and turning our backs on others. We get out through solidarity with everyone—especially the most vulnerable.
Starting tomorrow, the Trump administration is set to send notices to 1,000 student loan borrowers (first round) noticing them of an intent to garnish their wages for student loan debt.
This is cruel and unnecessary.

The other thing about normalizing gAI use in higher ed is that we are teaching our students that they cannot trust their own creativity, their own thoughts and brains, their own skills without having it reshaped/shellacked/transmogrified by LLMs. We’re setting them up for failure and dependence.
Rest is *good*, unscheduled time is *good.* You are not always either producing or decaying. Creativity flows from shutting things up enough to hear yourself, to be able to synthesize everything you’ve taken in lately.
