I love Tamsyn Muir. An audacious risk-taker and rule-breaker, Muir is the author of The Locked Tomb series. Muir plays with multiple points of view, among other bold craft moves. If you're bored with the writing process, follow Tamsyn's advice: write in different genres, read widely, have fun!

Winter Solstice. My favorite day. The oranges are dry and ready, my wife made a chocolate cake, and a bean soup is in the slow cooker. I took a bit more time creating my 13 wishes this year. I know this time is difficult for many. I hope for all to have warmth, peace, and love this Yule.

It’s that time of year again. Two days until Winter Break and my 8th grade classes are watching The Outsiders. This photo is a few years old; I haven’t slicked my hair back in a while. I think I need a hair cut, but I’ll go to the salon instead of using a switchblade.

Around ten years ago, I had a student write a fantastic short story about a professional Operation player who participated in tournaments. No spoilers, but could you imagine what could go wrong? Choose your own game: Sorry, Trouble, Uno...Trivial Pursuit!

I am working to recenter the idea that, ultimately, I write to make magic. I write to process the deep, hidden wounds with the hopes that others with similar experiences can process right along with me. Authors, why do you write?

Is it seasonal depression? Burnout? The chaos in the country and the world? I’m exhausted.

For the longest time, I had requisites for creativity. The right chair, the right beverage, the right pen, the right candle. Hell, even the right sweater. Then I realized my creativity couldn’t wait for perfect conditions. What do you absolutely need to be creative?

Writing prompt Wednesday! Write a scene in which your character is in the throes of illness. Use sensory details and internal thoughts to show the reader what the character is experiencing.

I’m still figuring out my place on this app. Writer. Reader. Gardener. Teacher. Parent. Spouse. This space just feels so different to me than the others. Any advise on how to connect?

I consider myself a plantser. I write, plan, write more, etc. I'm beginning to question my choices. Terry Pratchett said, "The first draft is just you telling yourself the story." Have I taken it too far? Should a 60,000-100,000 word draft act as an outline? How do you write your stories?

I'm taking a month away from social media with the hopes of reconnecting with my creativity before continuing to build this community. Drink water. Do your best to get a good night's sleep.

When Beulah asked Stella for her blood in Vines and Fire, Stella had no idea what she agreed to. Here's a taste of where it started and how it's going in Binds and Breath, Book Two in the Goddess of the Trees series.

But I have another trick I use to help me. I find my favorite book on Goodreads and peruse the 1 star reviews. It reminds me that opinions vary wildly. Not everyone is going to like what I write or how I write it, and even the books I hold dear to my heart receive rejection.

My eyes may skip right past the positive, and if I allowed myself, I could easily believe I’m horrible and should never write again. So, what do we do? Well, we remember that reviews are for readers. We want our work getting into the hands of people who will like our stories and like our style.

When I was in school, I didn’t understand what I had done wrong to get a 96 instead of a 100…needless to say, critical feedback can feel like my guts are being torn from my body.

I can’t change my personality, but I can lean into (mostly) healthy coping mechanisms to get me through it. When we decide to share our writing, we will receive feedback. Beta readers. Editors. ARC readers. It comes for all of us.

🧵Thoughts on self-publishing as someone with ADHD Part 2: Coping with rejection sensitivity dysphoria. To be a writer, you have to have a thick skin. Meh. It’s not that easy for those of us whose neurodivergence includes rejection sensitivity.
