Hairy footed flower bees are out and about, often one of the first solitary bees you can see in the year. They prefer to forage on long flowers such as lungwort. The females are all black with red hairs on the hind legs, the males are brown with hairy middle legs.

A walk in the peak mushroom season in Colgate, West Sussex
Some of my finds from a walk through the mushroom peak in the West Sussex beechwoods in late October 2025. This was the year I got to know matt bolete, a mushroom that sounds like a footballer.

Protect caterpillars as UKβs moth population plummets, urge charities
Instead of removing plant-munching caterpillars, gardeners asked to take relaxed attitude to support the moths many of them grow into
In the guardian today asking gardeners to take the tiny hit from a few caterpillars.. Avoid pesticides, use manual removal, physical barriers and pruning. To help restore moth populations. It's not too much to ask.

The Narcissus bulb fly (Merodon equestris) is a bumblebee mimicking hoverfly that can be a pest of flowers like daffodils. This is as larvae, the adults donβt mess with the bulbs. These fluffy flies have a small triangle on the hind leg as an identifying feature.

A particularly beautiful Hyacinth. Each flower is pink on the outside and pale blue near the stem.
As the world becomes a more dangerous place because of decisions made by corrupt people, my world shrinks to what I can manage and enjoy so today as the sun is shining, I will spend time in my tiny garden.
