Ontario is bracing for ‘tougher times,’ finance minister warns Amid global economic uncertainty, Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy is signalling his March 26 budget could have some sobering news for Ontarians.

Billionaires and CEOs are living the life—and amassing a greater and greater share of the economic pie

Inequality is widening

Yet, the Ontario govt signals no tax increases even for the billionaires—while the little people must endure health care cuts and austerity

Converts really need to have Catholic grandmothers assigned to them, to properly develop their sense of guilt and humility, with a regular chorus of "Have you no shame?".

I’m floored when cities fall all over themselves trying to attract Amazon. They’re a heinous employer, and a toxic presence with the way they lobby against public transit. (They don’t want their employees hours tied to bus schedules.)

So Doug Ford has money for a private European spa on prime waterfront land and to replace a Science Centre that didn't need replacing, but is bleeding a dental program for poor children dry?

And I'm so grateful that @mustafahirji.bsky.social continues to be a truth-teller.

During my mat leave, around 12 years ago, I recall a fellow mother saying that her younger sister and BIL had started to wear watches to look more mature at work. I wear a watch, by the way, and was shooketh.

You’d need to have residency. I recall visiting a fellow Canadian there and he’d received a voter card in the mail, likely telling him where the polling station was.

Doug Ford’s government said traffic officers could help replace banned speed cameras. Three months later, here’s what Toronto police say Most of the 150 speed camera locations in Toronto are not eligible for traffic-calming infrastructure.

Classic.
Big Dumb Doug Ford banned speed cameras, promising better solutions.
None have appeared.
Speedsters will get away with it just like they did pre-cameras.
More pedestrians will die.

Screenshot of an OMA email in my inbox, Jan 18, 2024:

At this stage in our discussions with the ministry, it’s clear the Year 3 compensation adjustment will be less than the 2.1 to 3.6 per cent range that had been anticipated during 2021-2024 PSA negotiations, primarily because of the unanticipated and unprecedented growth in Ontario’s population.

Specifically, the population growth in 2023 is 3.1 per cent, which equals to around half a million new Ontarians. This is the highest growth in any single year since 1972, and more than double the average population growth of 1.3 per cent over the last 50 years. This growth simply could not have been anticipated at the time the parties were negotiating the PSA.

Later, during a fireside chat, the minister put it more clearly: “Our health-care spending is unsustainable. We just have to deal with reality that we can’t keep spending, particularly when our population is flattening.”

The comments come at a time when hospitals warned the government they are facing a billion-dollar structural deficit and are now preparing for “difficult decisions” unless the Ford government increases health-care funding in its upcoming budget.

So many excuses for starving public health care. Who cares if they make sense or are consistent?

Thing is, even if basket-weaving courses were the problem (they are not), it still makes zero sense to make it way more expensive for poor students to take them, but leave net prices basically intact for wealthier students to do so.

Zero sense, that is, until you remember Ford hates poor people.

In terms of what cures are being lost:

- Epstein-Barr virus is perhaps the major trigger for multiple sclerosis
- herpes simplex virus causes cold sores, genital herpes, infections in babies, deadly meningitis
- shingles virus causes an intensely painful disease

Regulations are what keeps ordinary Americans healthy and, often, alive.

It took spoiled meat and rodent droppings out of our food. It took harmful lead out of our gasoline and paint. It took poison out of our water.

Deregulation only achieves one goal: making rich corporations richer.
