Weβre kicking off 2026 strong! Our Executive Director Dawn Sherman is presenting on returning Buffalo back to the land at the National Bison Association Winter Conference (Jan 21β24) in Broomfield, CO. #Bison #Buffalo nationalbison.org/event/nation...
Some affirmations for 2026:
π± I move at the pace of nature β steady, rooted and resilient.
π± I trust the seasons of my life, knowing growth often begins quietly.
π± Like a forest, I am stronger through connection that nourishes me.
π± I welcome change the way rivers welcome new currents.
The animal world offers surprising strategies for thriving in the cold. Here's some wild tips for managing winter from nature's survival experts.
#TradishTuesday: Buffalo's low grazing style fits perfectly with short grasses. They take only whatβs needed & move on, letting the land renew itself. A reminder of how balance & respect keep everything thriving. tankafund.org/donate

Tanka Fund launched at the Black Hills Powwow 11 years ago β and we were proud to return this year. βPowwowβ comes from pau wau, meaning a sacred gathering. Once misused, now reclaimed β a celebration of resilience, song, and community. πͺΆππ½ #TradishTuesday #TankaFund
Our range ecologist intern, Nicole Cournoyer, shares insights with a student. Tanka Fundβs mission has always been about creating opportunities for the next generation to reconnect w/traditional food systems & continue the work of restoration. For the land, people, & the Buffalo. #TankaFund #Native

Fox trotting through a herd of Bison
This little fox tends to hang out with the Bison herd. He lets them stir up the mice for him, easier hunting.
Jayme Murray, Buffalo herd manager for Cheyenne River Buffalo Company, shared the reality of managing a conservation herd as a private rancher. Every challenge falls on them. Partnerships like Tanka Fund become essential.

Sweetgrass β peji wacanga in Lakota β is used in ceremony, prayer, & smudging to invite blessings & good energy. At the Buffalo to School Conference recently, a sweetgrass braid was passed like a talking stick.

The movement of Buffalo gives Native grasses time to regrow. Their hooves press seeds into the soil. Their dung feeds it. Grasses like big bluestem, switchgrass, and Indian grass evolved with them. This is land with memory β and Buffalo are the ones who remember.
