Zulip — organized team chat Zulip is an organized team chat app for distributed teams of all sizes.

We've been using zulip (project.zulip.com) for about 8 months now. Takes a bit of getting used to if you're more familiar with Slack, but it's pretty flexible, their unlimited message hosting is free for research groups, and it can be easily exported for self-hosting.
