Lucky is the man who does not secretly believe that every possibility is open to him. Ask me about the Victorians

World Baseball Classic season, baby... if you want to watch the best Czech and Australian baseball players in the world match up in Tokyo it's the only game in town

Thank you for replying to this because I thought about you the other day when Melvin's daycare posted this photo of him on Facebook and I kept meaning to get in touch. He's a natural

Nancy (to me, in the car): When you're a baby and just born do you think you're afraid?
Me: Huh... I don't know that you can really understand your feelings like that when you're a newborn.
Melvin (unprompted): I scared of the fan in mine room. Because it looks like Ghost Face.

Look: If you don't figure out what young people like on the comics page you're going to wake up one day and find they aren't reading newspapers anymore. (Great 1996 landing page too)

Landed on a Wikipedia article about a random comic called The Norm. Have not read the comic but am now reading the archived website... it was a great moment in time when the major feature on your comic's website could involve telling people to watch for it in their newspaper and mail you a clipping

Read "Cathedral" by Raymond Carver for the first time since grad school... he's still got it

If you look this guy up on Wikipedia you should know that, according to "Hard Landing," he was basically a patsy set up by the airline's previous CEO. So you shouldn't let this color your enjoyment of his biographies of William Cobbett and Virginia Woolf

A career

Love that, I have some John Gunther "Inside Europe" and "Inside the Soviet Union" books from the 60s and 70s along those lines. This sort of book is extremely high variance but the best ones are a blast to read

Obviously this is a pseudogenre built around reading "Car: A Drama of the American Workplace" and then having to keep scratching that itch for the rest of your life. Some other good ones:

Found another book in my favorite pseudogenre, "business nonfiction from the 90s where nervous execs and teams of engineers are using a mix of computers, physical models, fax machines, etc to build or use a cool thing." Lots of fun so far

I was ragging on Lindsay for buying one that was missing the marquee topper but she really showed me in the end

Thank you to @reidman.bsky.social, @charlieverdin.com, and @nosyum.bsky.social for their assistance in this insane project. We had to do a kind of Great Pyramid log railroad to get it through our back yard and then Reid took off our front door. Both pieces weigh more than a refrigerator

Every night before bed Nancy has me play an NES game for ~15 minutes on her little TV while we talk about it and lately it's been Little Nemo. I hope I'm modeling patience and a cheerful recognition of my limitations for her because I'm definitely not modeling being good at videogames

I actually hadn't until I started Peg-posting here, but it's an awesome record. I.G.Y. is probably my favorite so far

At first the live version was kind of scotched for me by his not singing "Peg" with the backing vocalists in the chorus, but then I realized that I was in the car and could just sing it *for* him, and we were back in business

I had Peg from their 1995 live album on in the car as we drove to work this week and Lindsay asked me why it sounded like he was having such a hard time singing... this is both a testimony to my Peg karaoke prowess and a sign that she, too, hears the hidden Family-Guy-Randy-Newman note

Norm Macdonald's Story About A Life-Saving Pig | Late Night with Conan O’Brien YouTube video by Conan O'Brien

Going to improve this thread with a 1996 clip that is presented as it should be, and best watched in bed on a 20 inch CRT in a big oak entertainment center. Love the face he makes at "but man I tell you there's lots of funny stories from there" www.youtube.com/watch?v=vATV...

Yeah it wouldn't surprise me at all, the beats and pans and scans they use for these are so rote that given enough rendering time you could probably automate it on the computer I used in high school. Definitely no obvious human touch on these things

Hey Norm, these jokes are great, thanks for submitting them to the Insane Funny Vids OOC TikTok account, but I had a noteβ€”I wonder if they'd be even FUNNIER if you told them faster, just kind of straight through without the digressions. It just takes a long time to learn about why the moth's so sad

Sometimes YouTube will get me with a Norm Macdonald late show joke I recognize that's been hacked into a Short and I'll click it. And man, they're worse after they've had the vertical video edits bolted on. Oh he's stopped abruptly in mid-sentence, thank you for zooming in on his face to ruin that

No don't show an interest in my favorite thing! I would hate it even more if you started asking me to go to the park and play catch or play home run derby. Anything but asking me to coach your little league team!
