There are 211,500 glaciers on this planet and we'll lose most of them this century because of human emissions! 🧊🔥

The peak of glacier extinction will occur 2040 to 2055! 📈

But each fraction of degree matters! 🌡️

Some of them can be saved! 🙏

Sea level doesn’t rise at the same rate everywhere – we mapped where Antarctica’s ice melt would have the biggest impact Understanding what happens to Antarctica’s ice matters, because as it melts, sea levels rise, affecting lives and economies around the world.

Antarctica’s melt affects everybody but won’t hit every coastline the same.

New maps show where seas could rise the fastest, and why millions of coastal residents should pay attention now 🌊

Ocean warming threatens the viability of 60% of Antarctic ice shelves - Nature The viability of Antarctic ice shelves under low rates and high rates of global warming is modelled to estimate when it will become unfeasible for the ice shelves to maintain their present-day shape.

🌊 Ocean warming threatens the viability of 60% of Antarctic ice shelves

If global temps stay <2 °C, nearly all 64 ice shelves survive by 2300. But above ~4.5 °C, ocean melt causes 38 shelves to collapse by 2300, risking up to 10 m sea level rise.

This is figure 1, which is a schematic of the processes that contribute to the Antarctic ice-shelf mass balance.

Up to 59% of Antarctic ice shelves may be at risk of disappearing under high-emission scenarios by 2300, according to an analysis of the effect of ocean warming in Nature. This could result in up to 10 m of global sea-level rise. go.nature.com/47Ag4k1 🌊 🧪

Model overview: (a) preferential orientation of spheroids with various aspect ratios in wave and shear flow, (b) optical parameters for light attenuation by a particle, (c) change in light attenuation due to preferential particle orientation.

The way light reflects and refracts from water, esp. near the coast, has a lot to do with the sediment ( and other) particles suspended in them. What I didn't realize was that the waves can orient the particles, and thus how light behaves. 🧪🌊
