I think it definitely was created for that, a "future class-esque" add on to seem inclusive whilst separating. Because if games have impact in completely different ways now what? 🤣

I know AAA titles can tend to drown out others, but I don't think the solution is unintentionally boxing underrecognised excellence into an arbitrary "impact" category that pits games with completely different types of impact against each other.
If audiences positively connect with another culture whilst playing a game, that's because of excellence in one or many of those categories.
Games that center underrepresented cultures can, and should, be nominated for the other things they also do well; art style, audio, performance, narrative. #thegameswards

It's enjoyable but that element definitely annoyed me. It's happened other media forms, so I shouldn't be surprised
It's quite annoying because everyone's so used to non-Western cultures being used for mysticism and allure around a White character, many don't see the issue with it.
Oh and the civilization was enslaved...
On the surface the game is enjoyable, but how the narrative deals with culture left a lot to be desired, and could be seen as quite tone deaf
It's giving someone always wanted to tied to an "exotic" culture without actually being from the culture
A random White woman from England, no cultural ties the island,
has an illness/power that is tied to an a civilization that existed 1000s years ago on an island 74 miles east of Tahiti. No explanation. But she uses phrases like "people like me" and
"I'm going back home" so is she Polynesian
It feels like the Polynesian culture is just there to make the game "interesting" but I'm going to circle back once I finish, in case there's an explanation at the end
Call of The Sea I'm getting close to finishing it, enjoying but it also kinda annoyed me a little. It engages in the whole centering of a White character against a backdrop of a Black/Brown culture with no tangible explanation or connection (thus far).

Thank you!
How many times is Claudia from the dragon prince gonna be swindled? I'm tired of her rash and irreversible decisions
Ruining the world since the 1400s. How can you have such a deep need for power and the need to feel superior over other groups of people for centuries?
I had the chance to present the @baftagames.bsky.social Student Award last week with @jayannlopez.bsky.social ! So many talented developers, it was an honor to celebrate them and to be considered for presenting ❤️
