It's one of the things I've learnt in TLOU: you don't always need to bring out all the bells and whistles; it can be much more effective to focus on a single subject/object and let the game's art (direction) shine through.

Based on the tips already given mine would be:
Participate in themes and competitions without worrying if your work is "good enough".
Even if your entry doesn't get selected they are a great way to spark your own creativity, engage with others, learn and to show both yourself and your work.
*Sips coffee*.. Ahh, a day of respite, fun and that magical sentence: "I think I'll go take a nap.." 😌
