The thing I miss most about President Biden is the feeling of waking up in the morning and NOT needing to brace myself for what absolutely shitty thing has happened.

The next time you're evaluating a city council candidate, pay attention to how they treat staff in public meetings. These are public servants with domain expertise that have dedicated their lives to making their cities better and they are so often dismissed or treated with contempt.
This has been on my To Read list for a while, so let me know what you think!
Looks lovely!
Publicly supporting women is nice, but what really matters is what men do behind closed doors. What matters is how they hold each other accountable.
The menβs hockey team shouldnβt get a pass because they were in the locker roomβthatβs where women need their support the most.
What did you buy last minute in prep for being snowed in?
I have many thoughts (and feelings) about this observation.
we need to talk about that Ring Super Bowl ad
Whereas Sara Copeland served as North Kansas City's first Community Development Director, and... (Other fancy whereas clauses) Now Therefore, I, Bryant DeLong, Mayor do hereby proclaim February 1, 2022 to be Sara Copeland Day.
Happy fourth anniversary of Sara Copeland Day! Celebrate appropriately. π₯³
Never mind the jobs you had, tell me five classes you took in college:

Statement from Michael and Susan Pretti Parents of Alex Jeffrey Pretti βWe are heartbroken but also very angry. Alex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital. Alex wanted to make a difference in this world. Unfortunately, he will not be with us to see his impact. I do not throw around the βheroβ term lightly. However, his last thought and act was to protect a woman. The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trumpβs murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He had his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down, all while being pepper sprayed. Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man. Thank you.
Kare 11 local news just read, in full, this statement from Michael and Susan Pretti, the parents of Alex Pretti.
"Please get the truth out about our son."
fantastic piece from my colleague @polgreen.bsky.social that gets at something i have been thinking about. what, exactly, is the administration's strategic goal in minnesota? what does "victory" look like for trump and miller?
NFL - National Floating League
Oh, Le Monde. They were so nice. I miss their croissants, too.
I have to rave about the dinner we had tonight at Mineral Lounge. Absolutely delish and the wine & sherry pairings were perfect. Can't wait to go back! #KCRestaurantWeek
That is an amazing looking playground.
Hot take: performers in the Rose Parade other than marching bands should also be covered in flowers.
I'm actually not in a book club. I guess I'm a book freelancer.
In 2026, my goal is to read my age again -- and then surpass that and see how many books I can add to my metaphorical Completed Shelf. Too many books, too little time!
Happy reading, friends! May all the endings be satisfying.
Finally, The Tainted Cup *and* A Drop of Corruption by Robert Bennett Jackson. Both are mysteries in a fantasy world. I hope there are more Ana and Din mysteries.
I started my year of reading with Ann Patchett's annotated version of Bel Canto. It had been a long time since I read Bel Canto & it was so interesting to read it again with her thoughts & reactions in the margins. (A gift from @markgalus.bsky.social!)
More Than Words by @biblioracle.bsky.social
About worrying in the age of ChatGPT etc. I don't read a lot of nonfiction, but this was timely and thought provoking.
The Warm Hands of Ghosts by Katherine Arden. A spur of the moment purchase from Rainy Day Books. It's set in WWI & was engrossing. Sad in places, a little magical, a little suspenseful, really good.
Did you know that you can suggest materials for @kclibrary.bsky.social to acquire? I made 3 suggestions this year, including Death in the Spires, and all 3 were approved and I got to check them out first.
I love the library!

Death in the Spires by @kjcharleswriter.com
A mystery involving a group of college friends. I loved it.
I read the most books in May and July - 8 each.
I read the fewest books in September, which was the month I hit my goal.
Most read author - @kjcharleswriter.com, with 5 books.
There are 10 repeat authors accounting for 31 books on my 2025 reading list.
My most read genre, same as 2024, was Science Fiction/ Fantasy, which was 44% (26 of 59) of my books. Non-fiction accounted for just under 10% of my books.
Because of my goal, I found myself finishing books I otherwise would have abandoned in January. But then I got in a groove and felt comfortable ditching things that weren't enjoyable.
I finished 59 books this year! That surpassed my goal by quite a bit!
