Voorzichtige klassieker vanwege de productie, Rubin heeft in die periode een nieuwe standaard neergezet. Postmoderne rock, ongegeneerd absurd dat Engelse pseudo-goths opeens een soort Amerikaanse rock gaan spelen die nooit echt heeft bestaan. Een kopie van een kopie, et cetera.

Dat gezegd hebbende, een aantal vsn mijn favoriete platen zijn dubbelaars waarvan Bitches Brew echt compleet is. Daydream Nation ook. Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld en Selected Ambient Works II zitten er tegenaan. En Escalator over the Hill als 3x lp ook.

Als "instigator" wil ik opmerken dat een dubbel-lp wat mij betreft niet perfectie hoeft na te streven, dat de charme meestal zit in het loslaten, de probeersels, grappen, collages, uitweidingen naast natuurlijk een goed aantal krakers.

Al die covers op kant C, niet doorheen te komen. Kant A + B perfectie.

De parmantige drums van Prince zijn vreemd genoeg zo eigen dat ze het jaren tachtig-geluid overstijgen. Dubbelaars als exces zijn een cliche kritiek, ik denk dat er geen perfecte dubbel-lp's zijn, het is de ambitie die het spannend maakt. De reeks van Dirty Mind tot Lovesexy is hoe dan ook uniek.

Ik was even bang dat ik GAS was vergeten. Onmogelijk natuurlijk. Sta hier verder nog 100% achter.

Ja, veel mooie beelden en leuke informatie maar in sneltreinvaart vertelt. Het had van mij wat meer mogen ademen door wat langer de muziek te laten spreken. Maar deze komt vast wel een keer bij Uur van de Wolf of op Netflix.

Ja, wil hem nog steeds wel zien. En Flea is okay, ik vind het alleen jammer dat bij muziekdocumentaires allerlei lui ook hun zegje moeten doen. Ik kon de dag erna wel met Cineville naar de Sun Ra docu en daar zaten ook wat overbodige praters tussen (naast mensen die wel wat te melden hadden.)

Verreweg mijn favoriet van zijn conventionele platen. Heerlijk rauw en duister.

Vreemd genoeg deden ze bij deze documentaire moeilijk over Cineville dus helaas overgeslagen. Aan de andere kant zag ik in de trailer Flea en Grohl en toen werd ik al minder enthousiast.

En die is ook nog eens vrij matig.

He spent 3 days in October 1974 recording everything that passed through his field of vision, from a café in Place Saint-Sulpice. The result was An Attempt at Exhausting a Place in Paris.
