Today, I was proud to join @sadiqkhanlondon.bsky.social
to launch London's bold new Vision Zero Action Plan.

Vision Zero is our initiative – with TfL, Met Police & London’s Councils - to eliminate tragic deaths & serious injuries on our streets by 2041.

Great to see launch of Vision Zero Action Plan 2. It is made up of actions that make London's streets safer for people on foot inc. reducing vehicle speeds, safe high streets (+ lots more pedestrian crossings), reducing traffic and more enforcement by Met Police

If you are talking to parties and candidates in your borough ahead of the Local Elections on 7th May, here are some suggestions for making streets and roads safer and more attractive for people who are walking and wheeling.

How long should it take to cross a junction?
In suburban London it can take a while, like crossing the junction of Christchurch Road and Merantum Way to walk between two neighbouring shopping centres. Is it acceptable to let pedestrians wait this long?

Great work again from @londoncycling.bsky.social to update their dangerous junctions map. Don't forget that there is also a map for the most dangerous junctions for pedestrians too.

All aboard! Three London boroughs get £30m green light to speed up buses Haringey, Lewisham and Southwark given go-ahead to redesign junctions and reprogramme traffic lights

Not only are London’s buses amongst the cheapest in the UK, but we’re making them faster too ⚡️

Our £30m investment in Haringey, Lewisham & Southwark will improve bus services and speed up journeys, supporting neighbourhoods and improving access to jobs and services.

Rapid work this. One of a number of schemes that can finally allow Central London to become as pedestrian-friendly as many European capitals. See too the Crown Estate plans for Regent St area and Camden's amazing proposals across Holborn.

Really good scheme for pedestrians going in St John St near to Farringdon Station and Smithfield Market and close to where the new Museum of London will be (part of which opens in 2026).

🌍 What do global cities such as Amsterdam, Stockholm and Edinburgh all have in common?

These major cities have ALL banned fossil fuel adverts. These ads have massive climate and health impacts, all while targeting politically influential decision makers.

TfL confirms changes to Congestion Charge inc. increase to £18 from Jan 2026 and the potential for annual increases. Sadly missing is the re-introduction of charging in the evenings to deter driving in the CCZ at the time when pedestrians are most out and about in town.

Safer Streets in Enfield: 20mph Speed Limits Making our neighbourhoods safer, cleaner and greener Enfield Council is proposing to introduce 20mph speed limits on residential some residential streets and roads in town centres — part of our wider ...

Speed was a factor in over 60% of collisions in Enfield in last 5 yrs.

Great to see Enfield Council introducing new 20mph zones in Edmonton, Palmers Green & Southgate.

Crashes fall approx 40% after 20mph zones are introduced.

This will save lives!

Do take time to have a look at the amazing plans from @camdencouncil.bsky.social and @adamdkharrison.bsky.social for the re-invention of the Holborn area as a place for people. So good!

...and more really good work in the pipeline in Newham. Super impressive is the amount of greening that the borough is getting into its schemes and how well maintained it is. Well done @plaistovian.bsky.social and colleagues.

Thanks so much to you John and colleagues for a brilliant tour of the Royal Docks Corridor. This scheme is vital for not just people in Newham but also has big lessons on how to tame main roads and make them much safer, greener and more pleasant places.

Early days but great to see St Martins Lane included in @london.gov.uk Summer Streets. It will be car-free from 11am to 11pm (until 31 October); 20 businesses hv applied for licenses for outside dining. Hopefully the start of it becoming more fully pedestrianised.

2 years of default urban/village 20mph in Wales has resulted in over 1,000 fewer killed or injured. The data shows a 25% reduction in casualties on the 20/30mph roads. Drivers gain with damage risk, crashes and premiums down. Well done Wales. bit.ly/4ppl030

Good to visit Hammersmith Bridge and see people enjoying walking across the bridge. Well designed with lots of separate space for people walking and wheeling and people cycling. So much quieter and calmer on Castlenau on the Barnes side of the bridge.

Car-free day closure of George St in Richmond by LB Richmond-on-Thames brought out large numbers of people to enjoy the town centre and support the shops and local businesses. Hopefully the start of a much bigger project to give more space to people in Richmond town centre.

London council weighs parking surcharge on 'supersize' SUVs Lambeth to commission study into whether larger vehicles pose a greater danger to pedestrians and cyclists

Brilliant to be part of this coalition of Lambeth children asking the council to take action to reduce the number of SUVs on our streets.

75% of primary pupils in London walk or cycle to school and giant SUVs are a growing threat to their safety.
