The First Page of my book: The Drowning Girl started haunting my dreams again when my cousin went missing. She was waiting for me every time I shut my eyes in the harrowing weeks before Nina was found and dragged from the river. If I’d known I was foreseeing my cousin’s death most of my life, maybe I could’ve changed it. All I could do was try to help her in the afterlife. Gran always said when one dies a traumatic death their spirit can get stuck in a loop, reliving that violence over and over. I couldn’t let her exist that way. So, I called upon her, with a simple altar placed alongside the memorials for the others who were pulled out of the East River that frigid fall. Striking the long wooden match, I shielded the flame from the wind with my wounded palm, determined to light the final candle. The first for the grieved. The second for protection. The third for invoking that which shouldn’t be spoken. One should never summon the dead. They can always find you. Follow you. Attach themselves to you. I knew better, but I didn’t want my cousin to be trapped. I really just needed to see Nina again. But it wasn’t her who came.
