I struggled to understand how a beach and basalt just go away in a matter of days. Then I looked at my photos and saw the power of the weather. Each of the photos were taken minutes apart and show drastic changes. The sublime power of nature should keep us humble and should remind us that we should be contributing to the imbalance that makes nature even more dangerous and unpredictable.
This photo shows basalt columns and fluffy clouds with dramatic light on the black sand beach.

I couldn't help but capture this springtime maiden and her dog carved from wood at the Speed Art Museum. The loving dog and the affectionate pets from flower adorned woman tugged at my heartstrings. This photo was taken at the Lady Bird Johnson Grove in Redwoods State and National Park. Two massive trees stretch up hundreds of feet into the sky from the left and right sides of the photo as the photographer points the camera vertically to capture the forest canopy. The effect creates an hourglass shape of sky and forest as the two trees on left and right create an intense one point perspective.

This photo shows a stone lion statue laying atop a pedestal at the entrance to the Legion of Honor Art Museum in San Francisco. The corner of the pedestal juts towards the photographer and creates a leading line towards the lion. The sky behind the statue is filled with a swirl of light clouds that are illuminated by the sun which is directly behind the lion. The clouds create a halo of light and a nice contrast for the black and white image.

Taken in March, the tree is just beginning to bud. The middle ground shows an arched bridge with arch supports over a lake with boats. This photo shows the outcome of the photographer looking up into the canopy of a Redwood Forest. Surrounded by trees of varying ages, some more than a thousand years, the thick trunks rise hundreds of feet into the sky where their canopies are obscured by fog. The one point perspective creates a central focal point where all the orthogonal lines arrive.
I took this photo recently on a trip to California. January in the redwoods is sometimes rainy, but not on this journey. I was surprised of how few people visited this area in the winter. We saw one other person in this Grove and the hour we spent there.

Last week I took a hike on the beach just outside of the Redwoods National Park visitor center. There was a little Bay where the Redwood Creek met the Pacific Ocean where harbor seals were hunting and playing. My hiking party sat on a driftwood tree to watch the seals and were far less active, so I stood up and walked to get some photos of some sea stacks and they got more active and interested in what I was doing. Then I danced a little bit for them and they were really curious then. We left them in peace soon after but enjoyed the interaction.

This photo shows a sign made on a sketchbook pad that says, "The new US monument of white-supremacist neo-fascist male-fragility." Behind the sign and across a highway, a long flat road stretches into the distance with two law enforcement vehicles on either side of the road with lights flashing. To the right, a blue sign reads, "Alligator Alcatraz."
While on a road trip in South Florida, I passed this place and saw people joyfully pulling over to get selfies with the Alligator Alcatraz sign. I was horrified. I had never seen a concentration camp before and couldn't process the reactions that people were having to it. So I turned to my sketchbook to tell the truth about this place. I returned to the same spot a few days later, needing to balance the hyped up lies with a dose of truth, and I got my own photos to share that truth.
